Bespoke kitchens in Fortis Green: what you get

Islands work well in kitchens with room to walk around them. We check there is comfortable space on every side, and in a narrow kitchen an island can make the room harder to use. If the room is narrow, we will suggest other layouts. If your home has a kitchen finished in your colours and cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls, kitchens made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

With a large share of homes around Fortis Green built before 1919, many kitchens still have a chimney breast, which can be built around rather than fought. Any capped chimney should stay ventilated, and damp is dealt with before anything is fitted. Plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Why people ask for bespoke kitchens in Fortis Green

Some want a kitchen that suits a period house. Painted cabinets, a dresser or a larder can sit well with original features and look as if they belong.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • Making the most of a galley kitchen
  • Spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets
  • Spaces sized for your oven and fridge
  • A pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers

Heath Hall, about 1.4 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room

Fortis Green homes and bespoke kitchens

About 56% of the homes in the streets around Fortis Green went up before 1919, and about 21% between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The centre of Fortis Green is within about a quarter of a mile of the Muswell Hill Conservation Area. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 56% of homes in the area around Fortis Green were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Older houses often have narrow kitchens at the back, with floors that slope, so cabinets are scribed and levelled on site.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t advise on your lease.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising at the design visit.

Questions we’re often asked

How do you fit bespoke kitchens in a flat in Fortis Green?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Kitchens are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do you make bespoke kitchens for homes in Fortis Green?

Yes, we work across Haringey, Fortis Green included, and across the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Which worktops and appliances can I have?

You choose the worktop, sink and appliances, and we design the cabinets around them. Your quote sets out what’s included.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

How fitting day works

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there’s some trimming and adjusting on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays during the design visit.

  1. We start with how you cook and what the kitchen needs to hold. Larders, dressers and islands can all be part of it, where space allows.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the layout.
  3. We send a quote in writing setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are made at our workshop.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home; plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician. We don’t arrange these trades ourselves.

Preparing the room

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Ask for a quote

Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, message us from the contact page and tell us about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Hand painting can be done in your home after fitting. Chips are simple to touch in.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribing is how cabinets meet a wall that isn’t flat, closing any gaps.

When you need someone else

It is useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • New sockets or circuits
  • Gas work, which is for a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • Moving water or waste pipes

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
