Wall beds in Grove Park: what you get

We fit wall beds in Grove Park and across London. First comes a design visit, where we measure and look at the wall, then a quote in writing. We make everything in our workshop and fit it in your home. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If you are living with more floor space in a studio flat and a guest room that sits empty most of the time, wall beds made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

The front bedroom in many 1920s and 1930s houses sits above a bay, which leaves the side walls for storage and the bay for light. Interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing around Grove Park, so it’s a room shape worth planning for. We measure every wall, even where the room looks square.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Bedroom storage in Grove Park

About 61% of the homes in the streets around Grove Park went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 15% between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Grove Park, Historic England’s list includes Baring Hall Hotel and associated stable block (Grade II), under half a mile south. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling can need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. In Grove Park, a van will usually need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Let us know about parking near your home at the design visit.

If you live near Chinbrook Meadows, wall beds are typically planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. If you live in a period home close to St Augustine's Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. For a family home near Haberdashers' Aske's Knights Academy, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Common questions about wall beds

Is Grove Park in the area you cover for wall beds?

Yes, Grove Park is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Lewisham and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Grove Park?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Is a mattress included with the wall bed?

The mattress needs to suit the mechanism by size, depth and weight. We can talk you through what the mechanism allows, so the mattress you choose fits.

Practical tips

These points come up often when people plan wall beds. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Plan a cupboard for spare bedding
  • Plan where chairs and desks will sit
  • Decide who the bed is mainly for
  • Check your lease if you live in a flat

Whether bedding can stay on the bed when it folds up depends on the mechanism. We can build a cupboard beside the bed for extra bedding.

Measure the space in front of the wall, not just the wall. The bed needs room to fold down, so plan where furniture will sit.

When is bespoke worth it?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

What wall beds cannot fix

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Getting consent under your lease
  • Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism
  • Plastering or decorating the room

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

How fitting works for wall beds

At the end, we tidy up. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. We come to measure and talk through the bed, the storage and the finish.
  3. You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. The wall bed is fitted, and any hand painting is done on site.

How to prepare

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

What it is made from

Hand-painted finish

If you’d like the bed to match the skirting or doors, hand painting works well.

Bed mechanism housing

The bed sits inside a cabinet built around its mechanism, fixed securely as its maker specifies. The front can look like a set of cupboards.
