St Johns Built-in Bookshelves

Bookcases and shelving walls built into your home, for homes in St Johns. We measure, design and quote first, then make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Shelves that sag under books
  • Shelves deep enough for large books
  • A bare wall above a doorway

Before and after fitting day

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Count roughly how many shelves your books fill now
  • Consider a mix of fixed and adjustable shelves
  • Consider deeper cupboards at the bottom
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need moving

Take the books off before moving an adjustable shelf and make sure each support is pushed fully home.

Watch for damp marks on external walls behind the shelves. Damp needs its cause fixing by the right trade, and it is easier to deal with before it spreads.

Built-in bookshelves in St Johns

Books weigh a lot, and a wall of them puts real load on the fixings. Each bookcase is fixed with fixings chosen for the wall. Loose plaster or a weak wall should be dealt with first. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are somewhere to keep toys and books tidy and a home library or study.

Where housing types are mixed, as they are in much of London, living rooms can be very different from one street to the next. You might have alcoves, a bay, a wide open-plan room or a compact one. Built-in bookshelves are designed for the room in St Johns that you have, with shelves sized so they don’t sag.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.

Built-in bookshelves in St Johns: local notes

In the streets around St Johns, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 36%) and the years since 2000 (about 32%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of St Johns, 13 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 20% of households in the neighbourhood around St Johns, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.

For an older house near Church of St John, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. For a family home near Ashmead Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. Living in a block of flats near St Johns station? Then it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

How fitting day works

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand makes the day easier, including anything on the walls near the work. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.

  1. You get in touch and let us know what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
  2. We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
  3. Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
  4. In our workshop we make the shelves from birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, sized for the span and the load.
  5. We fit it in your home with fixings that suit the wall, and a hand-painted finish, if you chose one, follows on site.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in St Johns

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in St Johns?

Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London, and St Johns is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in St Johns?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

How long does it take to fit built-in bookshelves?

It depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The bookcase is built in our workshop first.

Should my shelves be fixed or adjustable?

Some or all of them can be adjustable. We typically keep some shelves fixed for strength, and the rest can be adjustable.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

Materials and finishes

Shelves

Depth is set around what you keep: shallow for paperbacks, deeper for art books and records.

Plinths and scribe strips

In older houses, we usually scribe the sides and the top. It is what makes shelving look part of the room.

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?

A standalone bookcase needs to be fixed to the wall for safety anyway, so it is already halfway to built in. What really changes is the fit, the strength of the shelves and the finish, and every part is planned for the wall. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a recess, a slope or an odd corner, and most homes have at least one. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
