Built-in bookshelves in Deptford
Books weigh a lot, and a wall of them puts real load on the fixings. Each bookcase is fixed with fixings chosen for the wall. If a wall is weak or the plaster is loose, it is best put right before fitting. If your home has room for a record collection and books piled on the floor, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
In a block of flats, the stairs, lift and doors decide how big each section can be. Since most households around Deptford live in purpose-built flats, built-in bookshelves are designed in sections from the start. Joins are positioned so they’re hidden once everything is in place.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.
Is bespoke worth it?
Some flat-pack bookcases have long, thin shelves, so they bow once they’re full of books. We size each shelf for its span and load, with birch plywood, a stiffening lip or a support where needed. Standard furniture does not allow for boxed-in pipes, risers or meter cupboards, so it ends up with gaps or blocks access. Fitted furniture is built around them.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Built-in bookshelves in Deptford: local notes
In the streets around Deptford, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 34%) and before 1919 (about 22%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Part of Deptford is in the Deptford High Street Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. Purpose-built flats are more common around Deptford than across Lewisham: about 66% of households, against about 39%, based on Census 2021. So the route in, from stairs to lifts, is part of the design.
The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 1 mile east. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. Living in a block of flats near Deptford station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. Close to Sue Godfrey Nature Park? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.
Deptford is in the London Borough of Lewisham, about 1 mile south-west of New Cross. From period terraces to newer flats in Deptford, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Deptford is one of 22 places on our list for Lewisham.
In SE8, SE10 and SE14, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. We cover homes on streets such as Mill Lane, Dixon Road and Clare Road, along with the roads around them, whether you want built-in bookshelves or another piece made for the room. What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves
To work out the quote, we look at:
- The internal fittings
- Parking near your home
- Spray painting or hand painting
- How square the room is
Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
Before the design visit
There is no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
You do not need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly during the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Practical tips
None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:
- Think about whether the spacing needs to change later
- Let us know if a radiator sits where you’d like shelves
- Let us know about access early
- Plan heavy items for the lower shelves
Make a note of the paint colour used so any touch-ups match. Small marks on a hand-painted finish are simple to touch up.
Do not block the space left for radiator heat with books or objects. Heat needs to move into the room.
Fitting day, step by step
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loading near a block of flats can take some planning, so details of bays, permits or a loading area help. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- It starts when you tell us about the wall and your books.
- We come to measure and discuss the design.
- Your written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
- We make the shelving in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray finish is applied there too, if you chose it.
- The shelving is fitted, fixed and checked with you. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so it is best to load the shelves gently at first.
Before we arrive
- Tell us about parking near your home
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Keep pets in another room while we work
How to get a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, message us from the contact page.
Advice
Common questions about built-in bookshelves
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Deptford station?
Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
What happens when you come to measure?
It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
Can shelves go around a radiator?
It can be done, but it needs careful planning. The heat has to rise and move into the room, so we plan an opening or gap and never box it in. Some people prefer to keep shelves clear of it or ask a plumber to move it.
How deep should bookshelves be?
That depends on your books. Paperbacks need much less depth than art books or records, and a mix often works best. We plan depths around your collection at the measuring visit.
