Lewisham Built-in Bookshelves

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on built-in bookshelves in Lewisham starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • Shelves packed two rows deep
  • Space for art books and records
  • Bookshelves in keeping with an older house

Looking after your furniture

New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Let us know about parking and access during the design visit
  • Consider a mix of fixed and adjustable shelves
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need moving
  • Plan heavy items for the lower shelves

Fill the shelves evenly rather than all at once. Keep the heaviest books low and close to the supports.

Keep heavy things on low shelves.

How we make built-in bookshelves for Lewisham

Books weigh a lot, and a wall of them puts real load on the fixings. Each bookcase is fixed with fixings chosen for the wall. If a wall is weak or the plaster is loose, it’s best put right before fitting. Most enquiries start with storage for children’s books and games and shelving that frames a window, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, and a wall might be brick, lath and plaster, blockwork or plasterboard. That’s why every wall is checked at the measuring visit before the fixings are chosen. If your room has a chimney breast, the alcoves are an obvious place for built-in bookshelves; if not, a full wall works well.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the built-in bookcase designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

Materials and finishes

Plinths and scribe strips

The plinth raises the shelving and hides a sloping floor. Its height can match the skirting board.

Spray-painted finish

A sprayed coat gets into corners and along edges, which suits shelving with lots of edges. You choose the colour at the design stage.

From workshop to your room

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. The time the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking varies a lot across London, from permit zones to private bays, so let us know what’s near you during the design visit. If you live in a flat, any lift or building rules are worth checking too.

  1. You contact us with a few details about the wall and your books.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the wall, check how it’s built and plan spans and depths with you, and talk about cupboards below.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The bookcase is built in our workshop, with shelves sized for their span and load.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them. Fixings are chosen to suit brick, plaster or stud walls.

Before fitting day

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

How to get a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Questions from Lewisham

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Lewisham?

Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We’ll design around them.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

It depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The bookcase is built in our workshop first, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

What affects the price of built-in bookshelves?

Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, message us from the contact page.

Built-in bookshelves in Lewisham: local notes

In the area around Lewisham, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 37%) and the years since 2000 (about 32%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 12 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Lewisham. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. About 32% of homes around Lewisham were built since 2000, well above the figure for the rest of London as a whole, about 17%, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Newer homes often have stud walls and compact rooms, so fixings and sizes are planned with that in mind.

Queen's House, about 1.4 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If your children go to St Saviour's Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. For an older house near St Stephen's Church, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

Flats, leases and landlords

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Many flat-pack shelves are thin and long, so they bow once they’re full of books. We size each shelf for its span and load. Standalone furniture leaves gaps behind and above it that gather dust, while fitted pieces are scribed tight to the walls and ceiling, which makes cleaning simpler.

There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
