About our built-in bookshelves in Horn Park
We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. MDF gives smooth panels that paint well, and birch plywood gives strong shelves. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. We fit across Greenwich and the rest of London. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are shelving that frames a window and space for art books and records.
Around Horn Park, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. In a typical 1930s house, the front room has a bay at one end and a chimney breast with an alcove to either side, which decides where built-in bookshelves sit. Walls are often truer than in older houses, but they’re still measured carefully and scribed where they wander.
If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.
Why people ask for built-in bookshelves in Horn Park
For people who work from home, the wall behind the desk matters. Shelving close to the desk keeps books and files within reach, and a built-in run looks tidy on a video call. Cupboards below can hide the less tidy things.
Typical reasons people contact us include:
- Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste
- Bowing shelves in an old bookcase
- A bare wall above a doorway
- A room lined with books
For an older house near Church of St Saviour, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.
Before you choose who makes it
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
Why bespoke in Horn Park?
Standalone bookcases leave gaps at the top and sides, and on a wall that is not straight the gaps show. Built-in shelves are scribed to the walls and run to the ceiling if you want. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, which shows up against standard furniture. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Fitting day, step by step
When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop. How long the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.
- You contact us about shelving around a door, a window or a chimney breast.
- We visit to measure the wall, the openings and the skirting, cornice and picture rail the shelves must meet.
- A quote in writing follows, with the design, materials and finish.
- The sections are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight, so there are no gaps along the sides.
- The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.
Before we arrive
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
Arranging a design visit
Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. To send them, message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.

Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF gives crisp edges and smooth faces that take a painted finish evenly. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice.
Shelves
You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or both. Fixed shelves add rigidity, while adjustable ones can follow your books.
Living-room carpentry in Horn Park: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Horn Park were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 44%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 22%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Horn Park, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Saviours (Grade II), about 0.5 miles east. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Greenwich is inside it. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Horn Park. We go through parking and access at the measuring visit.
If your children go to Horn Park Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If you live in a flat close to Lee station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.
