Built-in bookshelves in North Harrow: what you get

If a radiator sits where you’d like shelves, it is worth planning carefully. The heat needs somewhere to go, so we do not box a radiator in without leaving space or an opening for it. Some people prefer to keep the shelves clear of the radiator altogether or have a plumber move it first. Typical reasons to get in touch are empty alcoves that could hold books and books with nowhere left to go; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A house from between the wars normally has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, so built-in bookshelves are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. Where your home is one of the interwar houses or semis that are a big part of the housing around North Harrow, there may be little or no cornice, which lets the furniture run straight up to the ceiling. Any skirting is cut around neatly.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

What it’s made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF gives crisp edges and smooth faces. We use the moisture-resistant grade for fitted work.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the bookcase is fitted. Small marks on it are simple to touch up, and it suits a traditional room.

Questions from North Harrow

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in North Harrow?

Yes. We cover all of Harrow and the rest of London, and North Harrow is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Will a conservation area stop me having built-in bookshelves fitted in North Harrow?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Should my shelves be fixed or adjustable?

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, and adjustable ones let the spacing change. Many people choose both.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Electrical work is not something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

How long will the fitting take?

How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will explain what fitting day involves before we start.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • The width and height of the space
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

What we need to know

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, use our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the wall and your books, including roughly how many books there are.
  2. We visit to measure the wall and discuss the design. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
  3. You receive a quote in writing setting out the shelving, materials and finish.
  4. We make the shelves and carcasses in our workshop, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
  5. We install the bookcase, set it level and fix it with fixings that suit the wall. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Arranging a design visit

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. For a quote, message us from the contact page.

Built-in living-room furniture in North Harrow

In the streets around North Harrow, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 54%) and before 1919 (about 23%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. North Harrow is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 52% of households in the area around North Harrow, according to Census 2021. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

For a family home near Longfield Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If you live near Headstone Manor Recreation Ground, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Alban, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Why bespoke in North Harrow?

Some flat-pack bookcases have long, thin shelves, and they can sag under a full load. Bespoke shelves are sized for the span and the weight, using birch plywood, thicker shelves or supports where needed. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and interwar homes often have all three. Fitted furniture is made around them.

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Why us?

  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home

What we don’t do

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we don’t do:

  • Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job
  • Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
  • Relocating radiators or pipework

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.
