How we make window seats for Harrow

A seat under a bedroom or nursery window can store toys, bedding or books. With deep drawers or a lift-up lid, it becomes useful storage as well as a place to sit. For children’s rooms, drawers are often easier for small hands than a heavy lid. In Harrow, the design visit is where the details are settled. If you are living with a recess under the window doing nothing and a ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay, window seats made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

An interwar house typically has a proper landing, sometimes with a recess or an airing cupboard, which can hold fitted storage for linen and spare bedding. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Harrow, it is worth looking up as well as down. Any boiler or hot water cylinder keeps the access and ventilation its maker asks for.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

What affects the price in Harrow

The price for your room depends on:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How big the furniture is
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Parking near your home

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What we need to know

These details help when you contact us:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Where you live, with the postcode

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Boards, parts and paint

Doors and drawer fronts

The fronts of a window seat are what you see most. We make them plain or panelled, with handles to match. Where needed, a grille is part of the front.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be applied once the seat is in place. It’s easy to touch up later. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first.

The problems window seats solve

For a child’s room, a seat under the window adds storage and a cosy spot. Drawers keep toys within easy reach. It also keeps the floor clear.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • A child’s room that needs storage and seating
  • A room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat
  • Wanting a seat without blocking the radiator
  • A bay with no furniture that fits

For families living near Whitmore High School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Fitting day, step by step

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. It is useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You contact us with some details about the bay or recess.
  2. At the design visit we measure each side of the bay, because walls in older houses are rarely square.
  3. A quote in writing follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The seat is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the angles we measured.
  5. On fitting day the seat is set level and scribed to follow the walls and floor, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

How to prepare

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Ask for a quote

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, send us a few details through our contact form. You receive a written quote after the visit.

Advice

Is bespoke worth it?

Bespoke seats are scribed to the walls and set level, so it fits neatly at the walls and floor. A bench simply sits in front of the window. In an older room, the difference shows. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, so fitted furniture is made to the wall’s own length. It can use the full height too.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

Fitted storage in Harrow

In the area around Harrow, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 33%) and before 1919 (about 27%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Part of Harrow is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and the rest of London sets its own rules. Where a street in Harrow is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. We ask about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Peter, a seat under a sash window can keep shutters and cills clear. Living in a block of flats near Harrow-on-the-Hill station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Your questions about window seats in Harrow

Is parking a problem for fitting in Harrow?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Is Harrow in the area you cover for window seats?

Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

How long is the fitting for a window seat?

How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We make the seat in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
