How we make built-in bookshelves for Hadley
A shelf’s strength depends on its span, its depth and its load. For a long shelf of books, we use a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support part way, or we divide the run with uprights. We often use birch plywood, which is stiff and strong. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are shelves that sag under books and low shelves children can reach.
Ceilings in interwar houses tend to be lower than in Victorian ones, so built-in bookshelves are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Hadley, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. Any skirting is cut around neatly.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

What happens on fitting day
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.
- You get in touch with some details about where the bookshelves will go.
- At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
- We then send a quote in writing for the bookshelves.
- We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the shelving in your home, scribing the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
- Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.
Preparing the room
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
Getting a quote
It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough measurements. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Hadley
Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Hadley?
Yes. Hadley is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Barnet and London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details.
I live near New Barnet station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
What happens if there’s a radiator where I want shelves?
It’s possible with some thought. Heat needs space to escape, so we plan an opening or gap and never box it in. Some people prefer to keep shelves clear of it or ask a plumber to move it.
Will built-in bookshelves sag?
We plan each shelf for its span, depth and load. For long runs, we use a thicker shelf, a front lip or a support, and birch plywood helps keep them flat. Mention anything very heavy when we plan.
What depth do built-in bookshelves need?
That depends on your books. Paperbacks need much less depth than art books or records, and a mix often works best. We plan depths around your collection at the measuring visit.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
Living-room storage in Hadley
About 42% of the homes in the streets around Hadley went up before 1919, and about 25% between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Hadley include Church of St John the Baptist (Grade II*), under half a mile south, and Stable Block to Hadley House (Grade II*), under half a mile north-east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 47% of households in the area around Hadley, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.
For families living near Susi Earnshaw Theatre School, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. If you live in a flat close to New Barnet station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

What we do not do
It is worth being clear about where our work stops:
- Decorating the rest of the room
- Structural changes, like taking out a chimney breast
- Plumbing work around the shelves
If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

Shelves
Long spans need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. Splitting the run into shorter bays also helps.
Spray-painted finish
Spraying coats edges and corners evenly, which suits shelving with lots of edges. You choose the colour at the design stage.
Why people ask for built-in bookshelves in Hadley
Often, the books simply have nowhere left to go. Piles on the floor and double rows on the shelves are a familiar sign. A built-in bookcase uses a whole wall, which holds far more than a standalone unit.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- Wasted wall space around a door or window
- Bare walls that could hold shelving
- Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy
- A room lined with books
For an older house near Christ Church, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.
Before you choose who makes it
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
- Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure
- How the doors are hung and adjusted

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
A row of standard bookcases rarely fills a wall, and on a wall that isn’t straight the gaps show. Ours are scribed to the walls and can run up to the ceiling. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, which shows up against standard furniture. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.
Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote.
