Built-in bookshelves in Homerton
Built-in bookshelves for homes in Homerton
If a radiator sits where you’d like shelves, it is worth planning carefully. Heat has to rise and move into the room, so any shelving over or around a radiator is planned with a gap or an open front. Often the simplest answer is to stop the shelves short of it or have a plumber move it first. We make built-in bookshelves from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a bare wall above a doorway and alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste.
In a mansion block flat, ceilings are often tall and the walls are rarely straight, while a flat in a newer block is more likely to have plasterboard partitions. Around Homerton, most households live in purpose-built flats of one kind or another, so the wall type is the first thing we check for built-in bookshelves. Tall pieces are fixed back securely, whichever wall it is.
Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Questions we’re often asked
Will a conservation area stop me having built-in bookshelves fitted in Homerton?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Homerton?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.
Can shelves go around a radiator?
It is possible with some thought. Heat needs space to escape, so we leave a gap or open front rather than boxing the radiator in. Some people prefer to keep shelves clear of it or ask a plumber to move it.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
Getting it in is planned at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need someone to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.
How fitting works for built-in bookshelves
When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections built in our workshop come in next, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Some buildings have a concierge, a lift booking system or set working hours, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Communal areas and floors are protected on the way in.
- You get in touch and let us know what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
- At the design visit we measure the wall and talk through shelf spans, depths and spacing so the shelves won’t sag.
- You get a quote in writing for the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop we make the shelves from birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, sized for the span and the load.
- The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.
Preparing the room
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Standalone bookcases cost less and you can have them right away. They also come with you when you move. Fitted shelving is made for one wall and stays with the house. Big standalone units do not always fit the lift or the turn on the stairs, whereas fitted furniture comes in sections made for the way in. It is then put together in the room.
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Living-room carpentry in Homerton: local notes
About 37% of the homes in the streets around Homerton went up before 1919, and about 21% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. The Clapton Square Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Homerton. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. The council can confirm if you are not sure. About 58% of households in the neighbourhood around Homerton live in purpose-built flats, based on Census 2021. For a flat, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
If your children go to Rushmore Primary School or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. For an older house near United Reformed Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.

How it is made
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, so we use it for uprights, panels and faces. It suits shelving on an external wall, which can be colder.
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, for an even, factory-like finish on shelves and uprights.
What prompts built-in bookshelves in Homerton
Some people are tired of shelves that bow and bookcases that lean. Bowing is a sign the shelves are too long or too thin for the load. Bespoke shelves are sized for the span and the weight.
Requests we hear often include:
- A home library or study
- Shelves that suit a period room
- Wasted wall space around a door or window
- Space for art books and records
For a flat near Homerton station, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
Before you choose who makes it
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
