How we make wall beds for Homerton
The mattress has to suit the mechanism; the mechanism maker sets the size, depth and weight it can take. We’ll talk through what suits the bed during the design visit, so the mattress you choose fits. If you’re living with a bed that looks like cupboards by day and a hobby room with a bed for guests, wall beds made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
Around Homerton, most households live in purpose-built flats, and blocks often have rules on lift booking, deliveries and working hours. It is useful to check those with the managing agent before fitting day. If your flat is leasehold, your lease may also need checking before wall beds are fixed to the walls.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Materials and finishes
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting suits a cabinet that should match the room’s woodwork.
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well for a clean, even look.
Tips worth knowing
A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Mention if the wall is a stud wall
- Keep the floor in front clear before lowering the bed
- Check there’s room for the bed to fold down
- Think about how often the bed will be used
Check the mattress stays within the limits the mechanism maker sets, as a heavier one can affect how the bed balances. A new mattress should suit the mechanism too.
If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. We can’t advise on your lease.
How we price wall beds
Several things affect the price:
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the design visit.
What to send when you get in touch
These details help when you contact us:
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
How fitting works for wall beds
There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the measuring visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Loading near a block of flats can take some planning, so details of bays, permits or a loading area help. The sections are assembled in the flat and fixed to suit the walls. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the room and how often guests stay is plenty.
- We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there is clear space in front to lower the bed.
- A written quote follows, covering the cabinet, the materials and the finish.
- We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the cabinet in your home and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.
- Before we leave we show you how to lower and lift the bed.
Preparing the room
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
How to get a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Wall beds in Homerton: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Homerton were built before 1919 (about 37%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 21%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Homerton include United Reformed Church (Grade II*), less than half a mile west, and Sutton House (Grade II*), under half a mile south-west. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your home in Homerton is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.
For a family home near Rushmore Primary School, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. The wider area includes historic houses like Sutton House, about 0.3 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. For a flat near Homerton station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
FAQs: wall beds in Homerton
Do you cover homes near Homerton station?
Yes, homes across Hackney and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
How do you get large furniture into a flat?
The furniture is built in sections, sized for the route not just the room. At the design visit, we measure the route along with the room itself.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
It is something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You do. We agree the colour with you.
