Built-in bookshelves for homes in Hackney Marshes

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves help brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing as your books change. We often mix the two. People normally come to us about bookcases that lean or wobble and space for art books and records, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, living rooms vary a lot in shape. Some have alcoves either side of a chimney breast, some a bay window, and some neither. The design for your home in Hackney Marshes starts from its own walls, and long shelves are sized not to sag.

You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Could you do it yourself?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standalone bookcases leave gaps at the top and sides, and on a wall that isn’t straight the gaps show. Ours are scribed to the walls and can run up to the ceiling. Gaps behind, beside and above ready-made furniture collect dust, and fitted furniture closes them, which makes cleaning simpler.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

I live near Lea Bridge station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Hackney and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Hackney Marshes?

Yes, we work across Hackney, Hackney Marshes included, and across the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

How do I get a quote?

Just message us from the contact page. Rough sizes and a few pictures help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design.

What happens at the design visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.

How do you stop shelves from sagging?

Sag comes down to span, depth and load. We choose the shelf thickness and material to suit, adding a lip or support on longer runs. Overloading any shelf will still make it bend, so spread heavy books out.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking varies a lot across London, from permit zones to private bays, so let us know what’s near you at the measuring visit. If you live in a flat, any lift or building rules are worth checking too.

  1. You get in touch with some details about where the bookshelves will go.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The sections are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight, so there are no gaps along the sides.
  6. Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Ask for a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To arrange the visit, message us from the contact page.

Is it time for built-in bookshelves?

For some, the aim is a home library or a quiet study. A room lined with books feels different and can take a desk or reading seat too.

People normally get in touch with us about things like these:

  • Shelves packed two rows deep
  • Shelves deep enough for large books
  • A bare wall above a doorway
  • Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste

For families living near Kingsmead Primary School, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.
