How fitting works for built-in bookshelves

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You contact us about shelving around a door, a window or a chimney breast.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight, so there are no gaps along the sides.
  6. Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance

Built-in bookshelves in Lea Bridge

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves help brace the bookcase, while adjustable shelves let you move the spacing later. A mix often works best so the bookcase stays rigid and you keep some flexibility. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are low shelves children can reach and bare walls that could hold shelving.

Victorian and Edwardian houses were built with solid brick outside walls, and internal walls may be brick or lath and plaster. Since a large share of the homes around Lea Bridge date from before 1919, we check which you have before deciding how built-in bookshelves are fixed. Lath and plaster needs a lighter touch and the right fixings, especially behind loaded shelves.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?

Many flat-pack shelves are thin and long, and they can sag under a full load. Bespoke shelves are sized for the span and the weight, using birch plywood, thicker shelves or supports where needed. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

  • Plumbing work around the shelves
  • Decorating the rest of the room

What it costs

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What we need to know

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Examples of the look you are after
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

My home in Lea Bridge is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

My home in Lea Bridge is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Can my walls take a full bookcase?

The wall is checked when we measure. We use fixings that suit the wall, from solid brick to studwork, and heavy loads are fixed into sound structure. If the plaster is loose or the wall is weak, it should be put right first.

How is the price worked out?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

How do I get started?

It is easiest to message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
