Built-in living-room furniture in Homerton

In the area around Homerton, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 37%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 21%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The Clapton Square Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Homerton. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Purpose-built flats are home to about 58% of households in the neighbourhood around Homerton, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

If your children go to Rushmore Primary School or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. The wider area includes historic houses such as Sutton House, about 0.3 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

Homerton is within the London Borough of Hackney, about 2 miles south-west of Shoreditch. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Homerton is part of that. Homerton is one of the places in Hackney where we make TV and media units, and the borough has 20 places on our list.

Every home in E5, E9 and E8 is covered for TV and media units. Streets in the area include Muir Road, Glyn Road and Rowe Lane, and we cover homes on all of them for TV and media units. TV and media units in Homerton: what you get

A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places. That job is for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes falls under Part P of the Building Regulations. It’s best done before we fit. If you are living with leads that show from every angle and alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste, TV and media units made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

In a block of flats, the stairs, lift and doors decide how big each section can be. With purpose-built flats home to most households around Homerton, TV and media units are designed in sections from the start, with the route in measured along with the room itself. The joins are placed where they won’t show once the furniture is fitted.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Common questions about TV and media units

My home in Homerton is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Homerton station?

Yes. We cover all of Hackney and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room.

Where should speakers go in a TV unit?

Speakers sound better in the open than shut in a cupboard. A shelf under the TV suits a soundbar, and larger speakers suit open shelves at the sides. Bring the sizes to the design visit.

How long will the fitting take?

The fitting depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need someone to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

How do you stop equipment overheating in a TV unit?

Ventilation is designed in wherever equipment sits, using open backs, gaps or vented doors. Each box should have its own space, and it is worth checking the maker’s guidance on clearances.

When is bespoke worth it?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Why bespoke in Homerton?

Not every bought cabinet allows enough air for warm equipment. We plan ventilation for boxes, consoles and amplifiers. Big standalone units do not always fit the lift or the turn on the stairs, whereas fitted furniture comes in sections made for the way in. The sections are assembled once inside.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

How fitting day works

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Where there is no lift, each section is sized to be carried up the stairs safely. The stair turns and landings set the limit. The pieces are assembled in the flat.

  1. You send us some details about the TV, the boxes and the speakers you use, including the size of the screen.
  2. We visit to measure the wall and talk through the design.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, ready for you to check.
  4. The unit is made at our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The unit is fitted in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance

Is it time for TV and media units?

Open-plan living is another reason. A built-in unit gives that wall order and holds books and everyday things as well.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • Cables trailing across the wall
  • Boxes and consoles on the floor
  • A TV stand that does not fit the wall
  • A TV that looks out of place in the room

Near listed buildings like United Reformed Church, under half a mile west of the centre of Homerton, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them at the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising during the design visit.
