Built-in bookshelves in Chiswick

Built-in bookshelves in Chiswick: what you get

Built-in bookcases are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF suits the panels and faces, while birch plywood is used where strength matters. You can have a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, in a colour agreed with you. We fit across Hounslow and the rest of London. Most enquiries start with storage for children’s books and games and shelving that works with picture rails and cornices; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In a house from the Victorian or Edwardian years, the front room typically keeps its chimney breast even where the fireplace has gone. Around Chiswick, where a large share of homes date from before 1919, that is a common starting point. The recesses either side take built-in bookshelves scribed to the plaster and cut around the skirting.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

What happens on fitting day

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. It starts when you let us know about the wall and your books.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan the shelves together.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. We make the shelving in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and go through it with you before we leave.

Preparing the room

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Ask for a quote

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, send us a few details through our contact form.

Advice

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?

Bespoke is not instant: there is a design visit, a quote and workshop time. If you’re only staying a short while, standalone shelving can make more sense. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so off-the-shelf pieces either do not fit or leave a gap either side. Furniture made for the space fills it.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the design visit.

How it’s made

Shelves

For a long shelf, we use a thicker board, a lip on the front or a support so it stays straight under books. Shorter bays are another answer.

Spray-painted finish

Because the bookcase is sprayed before fitting, it arrives finished. Let the paint cure fully before loading heavy books.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Chiswick?

Yes. Chiswick is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hounslow and London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details.

I live near Chiswick station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Hounslow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room.

How do I get a quote for built-in bookshelves in Chiswick?

The first step is to message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, use our contact form.

Is it possible to frame a window with bookshelves?

Yes. Shelves can run either side of a door or window and bridge across the top. It uses wall space that’s often left bare, and a window can have a seat or desk beneath.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

Getting it in is planned during the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

Built-in bookshelves in Chiswick: local notes

About 53% of the homes in the area around Chiswick went up before 1919, and about 14% between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Chiswick include Chiswick House Conservatory (Grade I), under half a mile south, and Deer House in Chiswick Park Near Italian Garden (Grade I), under half a mile south-west. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. More than half of the homes in the neighbourhood around Chiswick (about 53%) were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Houses of that age typically have alcoves, tall ceilings and picture rails, all of which shelving can use.

Close to Turnham Green? Built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. Hogarth's House, about 0.2 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Do you need built-in bookshelves in Chiswick?

Most people come to us because the books have outgrown the shelves. They’re stacked on the floor, two deep on the shelves or packed into boxes. Built-in shelving uses the full height and width of a wall, which holds far more than a standalone unit.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • Storage for children’s books and games
  • Books with nowhere left to go
  • Bare walls that could hold shelving
  • Shelving that frames a window

For an older house near St. Nicholas Church, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
