Wall beds in Kew, Richmond upon Thames

Planning wall beds for a home in Kew? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a written quote.

  • Shelves or a desk around the bed
  • A home office that also sleeps guests
  • A guest room that sits empty most of the time

Wall beds in Kew

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Ready-made wall bed units are available and typically cost less, and in a straightforward room they may be enough. They come in set sizes and finishes, so they may not suit uneven walls, low ceilings or alcoves. A bespoke cabinet is built for the room. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Why choose us

  • Designed for the room you have
  • We work across all London boroughs
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose

Wall beds in Kew

Not every mattress suits every wall bed, because the mechanism maker sets limits on size, depth and weight. We can go through what the mechanism allows when we measure, so the mattress you choose fits. If you are living with a proper bed instead of a sofa bed and a spare room that’s rarely slept in, that is what wall beds are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Floors in older houses often slope, and a large share of the homes around Kew are that old. Fitted furniture sits on a plinth or adjustable feet set level, so the doors line up and the gaps run straight. Where the wall bows, the edge is scribed to follow it.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

The problems wall beds solve

Most people come to us with a guest room that sits empty most of the year. A bed fills the room whether anyone is using it or not, and a wall bed lets the room be used every day.

People usually get in touch with us about things like these:

  • A playroom that can sleep visitors
  • A guest bed that disappears in the day
  • A real mattress for visitors
  • A storage wall with a bed inside

Near listed buildings like Zoffany House, less than half a mile north-west of the centre of Kew, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

What wall beds can’t fix

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Decorating around the cabinet
  • Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism
  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)

Questions from Kew

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Chiswick station?

Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room.

Can a wall bed go on any wall?

That’s something we look at when we measure. Different walls need different fixings, and the mechanism maker sets out what’s required.

How much room do I need in front of a wall bed?

That comes down to the size of the bed. At the design visit we measure the room and check there’s enough space in front.

What does a wall bed cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, storage and finish all affect the price. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Can a wall bed have storage around it?

Yes. We often design the bed as part of a wider storage wall with shelves or a desk beside it. We plan it so the bed still has room to come down.

Bedroom storage in Kew

In the area around Kew, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 48%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 15%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The centre of Kew is within about a quarter of a mile of the Strand on the Green Conservation Area. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Richmond upon Thames are set locally. Where a street in Kew is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit.

How fitting day works

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. First, you let us know about the space. Mention who the bed is for.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through the bed, shelves and desk. What the wall is made of matters, as the bed has to be fixed securely.
  3. A written quote is sent to you.
  4. The cabinets are made at our workshop.
  5. The wall bed is fitted in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.

How to prepare

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising at the design visit.
