North Sheen Built-in Bookshelves

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make built-in bookshelves for homes in North Sheen, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Storage for children’s books and games
  • Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices
  • Space for art books and records

Built-in bookshelves in North Sheen

Do you need built-in bookshelves in North Sheen?

Most people come to us because the books have outgrown the shelves. They’re stacked on the floor, two deep on the shelves or packed into boxes. Built-in shelving uses the full height and width of a wall for far more space than a standalone bookcase.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Wasted wall space around a door or window
  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files
  • Room for a record collection
  • Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste

If you live in a period home close to The Barn Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

How to choose a carpenter in London

Built-in bookshelves for homes in North Sheen

Books weigh a lot, and a wall of them puts real load on the fixings. We fix built-in bookshelves to sound walls with fixings that suit how the wall is built. Loose plaster or a weak wall should be dealt with first. If you are living with shelving behind a desk for books and files and room for a record collection, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In a Victorian or Edwardian terrace, the front room usually keeps its chimney breast even where the fireplace has gone. Around North Sheen, where a large share of homes date from before 1919, that is a common starting point. The recesses either side take built-in bookshelves scribed to the plaster and cut around the skirting, so they sit as if they came with the house.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the built-in bookcase we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

From workshop to your room

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it’s useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch about built-in bookshelves. A rough idea of the wall and the books is plenty to start with.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the wall, check how it’s built and plan spans and depths with you, and talk about cupboards below.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish, including spray or hand painting.
  4. We build the shelving in our workshop, sizing each shelf for what it carries.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them.

  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Getting a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote for you to look over. To book one, message us from the contact page.

Advice

What we do not do

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job
  • Plumbing work around the shelves
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Fixed and adjustable shelves
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Cupboards below
  • Spray-painted finish

What it costs

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How big the furniture is
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

What we need to know

When you contact us, these help most:

  • How you want to use the space
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Standalone bookcases cost less and you can have them straight away. They also come with you when you move. Fitted shelving is made for one wall and stays with the house, which is the trade-off. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Built-in bookshelves in North Sheen: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around North Sheen were built before 1919 (about 46%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 16%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. 19 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of North Sheen. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Richmond upon Thames sets its own rules. Where a street in North Sheen is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the design visit.

If you live near Dukes Meadows, built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like West Farm West Lodge, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Questions we are often asked

My home in North Sheen is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Will a conservation area stop me having built-in bookshelves fitted in North Sheen?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How are built-in bookshelves fixed to the wall?

We check how the wall is built at the measuring visit. Fixings are chosen to suit solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall, and heavy loads are fixed into sound structure. Loose plaster or a weak wall needs repairing before fitting.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
