Built-in bookshelves in Turnham Green, Hounslow

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on built-in bookshelves in Turnham Green starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • Room for a record collection
  • Bowing shelves in an old bookcase
  • Empty alcoves that could hold books

Built-in bookshelves in Turnham Green: what you get

Older rooms often have skirting, picture rails and coving to work around. We can cut around them, stop below them or run neatly up to them. Walls in older houses are rarely flat, so we scribe the edges on site. If your home has a room lined with books and shelves that suit a period room, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

In streets where so much of the housing went up before 1919, as it did around Turnham Green, the living room is often two rooms knocked through, with a chimney breast in each half. One pair of alcoves might take shelves and the other cupboards, a TV or a desk. Some internal walls in houses of that age are lath and plaster, so fixings are chosen to suit what’s behind the paint, and long shelves are sized so they do not sag under books.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

From workshop to your room

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays at the measuring visit.

  1. You describe the room and what the shelves will hold. It might be a whole wall, an alcove or the space around a door.
  2. We come to measure and talk through depths, heights and cupboards, with the shelf spans in mind.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. Once you’re happy, the shelving is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted in your home, ready for your books.

How to get a quote

To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.

Advice

Could you do it yourself?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

How we price built-in bookshelves

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The internal fittings
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Parking near your home

There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

What we need to know

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Approximate measurements of the space

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To share them, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Is parking a problem for fitting in Turnham Green?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

My house in Turnham Green is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Do you work for landlords and letting agents?

Yes. It works the same way as any job: design visit, written quote, workshop, fitting. Access can be arranged through the letting agent.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Can you build bookshelves over a radiator?

It can be done, but it needs careful planning. Heat needs space to escape, so we plan an opening or gap and never box it in. Some people prefer to keep shelves clear of it or ask a plumber to move it.

Do you make good the walls afterwards?

No. We don’t plaster or decorate, so any work on the walls is for a plasterer or decorator. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.

Living-room storage in Turnham Green

About 56% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Turnham Green went up before 1919, and about 16% between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Turnham Green include Chiswick House Conservatory (Grade I), less than half a mile west, and Deer House in Chiswick Park Near Italian Garden (Grade I), less than half a mile west. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If you live on or close to a main road in Turnham Green, let us know at the measuring visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

Hogarth's House, about 0.2 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. Close to Dukes Meadows? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. If your home is one of the older houses near St. Nicholas Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

With off-the-shelf shelving, you are limited to the maker’s finishes. We paint ours in the colour you choose, spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, to suit the room. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
