Built-in bookshelves for homes in New Addington
In the area around New Addington, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 78%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 13%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Croydon is inside it. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in New Addington. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit. About 78% of homes in the streets around New Addington were built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Rooms from that era are often squarer, with fewer alcoves and sometimes no chimney breast, so a full wall of built-in bookshelves is often the answer, with fixings chosen for the wall.
Addington Palace, about 1.5 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. Close to Addington Vale? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. If you live in a period home close to St Edward King and Confessor, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.
New Addington is about 6 miles north-west of Thornton Heath, within the London Borough of Croydon. Built-in bookshelves for homes in New Addington
A shelf’s strength depends on its span, its depth and its load. Long spans carrying books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support, or the run is split into shorter bays. Birch plywood is strong and helps shelves stay flat. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a bare wall above a doorway and shelves deep enough for large books.
In many houses from the 1950s and 1960s, the living room has a wide window and a plain chimney breast or none at all. Many homes around New Addington date from those decades, so built-in bookshelves are often planned to give the room a focal point. A run of low cupboards with shelving above can sit under or beside the window.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a post-war block of flats, the route in may include communal stairs, landings and a lift, so built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for each. If the building has rules on lift use or working hours, it helps to tell us at the design visit.

How to get a quote
The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit. To arrange the visit, get in touch through our contact form.

How it’s made
Plinths and scribe strips
The plinth raises the shelving and hides a sloping floor. Its height can match the skirting board.
Spray-painted finish
Spraying coats edges and corners evenly. The colour is agreed before we start.

How we price built-in bookshelves
The price for your room depends on:
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Spray painting or hand painting
- The overall size of the piece
We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.
Helping us understand the room
Ahead of the design visit, we’ll typically ask about:
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- The type of home and how the room is reached
It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough sizes. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
Flats, leases and landlords
If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Questions from New Addington
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in New Addington?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Do you cover homes near Hayes (Kent) station?
Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Can built-in shelves be adjustable?
They can be, and many people choose a mix. We usually keep some shelves fixed for strength, and the rest can be adjustable.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
Do pictures help?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
