Built-in Bookshelves in Thornton Heath

Thinking about built-in bookshelves in Thornton Heath? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a written quote.

  • Bowing shelves in an old bookcase
  • Books piled on the floor
  • Room for a record collection

Built-in bookshelves designed for your room

Is bespoke worth it?

A row of standard bookcases rarely fills a wall, and against an uneven wall the gaps are obvious. Ours are scribed to the walls and can run up to the ceiling. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

About our built-in bookshelves in Thornton Heath

Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. Long spans carrying books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support, or we divide the run with uprights. Birch plywood is strong and helps shelves stay flat. We make built-in bookshelves from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a home library or study and somewhere to keep toys and books tidy.

In a Victorian or Edwardian terrace, the front room usually keeps its chimney breast even where the fireplace has gone. That matters around Thornton Heath, as a large share of the homes there were built before 1919. The recesses either side take built-in bookshelves scribed to the plaster and cut around the skirting, so they sit as if they came with the house.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

The problems built-in bookshelves solve

Some people are tired of shelves that bow and bookcases that lean. A bowing shelf is normally too thin or too long for what it carries. We plan spans and thickness so shelves stay straight.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve are these:

  • Shelves deep enough for large books
  • Bowing shelves in an old bookcase
  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files
  • Storage for children’s books and games

Kingswood House, about 2.4 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Thornton Heath

About 53% of the homes in the area around Thornton Heath went up before 1919, and about 27% between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Thornton Heath include Church of St Stephen (Grade II), less than half a mile west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 39% of households in the streets around Thornton Heath live in terraced houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Many London terraces have a chimney breast and alcoves in the main rooms, which suit built-in bookshelves built to their exact widths.

If you live in a flat close to Thornton Heath station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If you live near Grangewood Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

Questions we’re often asked

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Thornton Heath station?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

My home in Thornton Heath is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

What depth do built-in bookshelves need?

It depends on what you keep. Paperbacks need much less depth than art books or records. We plan depths around your collection at the measuring visit.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

The furniture is built in sections, sized for the route along with the room itself. At the design visit, we measure the route along with the room itself.

Caring for painted furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Book your electrician first if sockets need moving
  • Mention parking and stairs when we visit
  • Consider a mix of fixed and adjustable shelves
  • Mention anything very heavy, like records or large art books

Dust shelves with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays.

Store the heaviest items low down, and never climb the shelves to reach the top.

What happens on fitting day

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the shelving you have in mind.
  2. We come to measure, look at how the wall is built and agree the layout.
  3. We send a written quote for the bookshelves, for you to look over.
  4. We make the shelves and carcasses in our workshop, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
  5. We fit it in your home, fixed securely to the wall. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Preparing the room

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF gives sharp edges and smooth faces, ready for spray or hand painting. We use the moisture-resistant grade for fitted work.

Shelves

Depth is set around what you keep: shallow for paperbacks, deeper for art books and records.
