Built-in bookshelves for your home in Purley

Built-in bookshelves in Purley: what you get

Built-in bookcases are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF suits the panels and faces, while birch plywood is used where strength matters. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. We work across London, including Purley. If your home has shelves deep enough for large books and a room lined with books, that is what built-in bookshelves are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Around Purley, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the front room may have a bay window at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall, and that layout shapes where built-in bookshelves work best. Walls are often truer than in older houses, but they’re still measured carefully and scribed where they wander.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the built-in bookcase designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it is finished.

From workshop to your room

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and talk through shelf spans, depths and spacing so the shelves won’t sag.
  3. Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
  4. The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves stiffened where they span furthest.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

How to get a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

Is it time for built-in bookshelves?

For some, the aim is a home library or a quiet study. A wall of shelves changes how a room feels, and can include a desk or a window seat.

We are often asked to help with:

  • Shelves that suit a period room
  • Bowing shelves in an old bookcase
  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files
  • Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy

Close to Dollypers Hill? Built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home

How to choose a carpenter in London

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Purley

About 31% of the homes in the streets around Purley went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 28% since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Croydon are set locally. Where a street in Purley is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Let us know what the parking is like at the measuring visit. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 62% of households in the area around Purley, according to Census 2021. A house like that typically has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

For a flat near Purley station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. For a family home near Christ Church CofE Primary School (Purley), built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?

Bespoke shelving takes longer than buying from a shop: it needs a design visit, a quote and making time. If you are renting or moving soon, a good standalone bookcase may be the better buy. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall usually ends with a gap, which fitted furniture avoids. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.

We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We can’t advise on your lease.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Purley

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Purley?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Is Purley in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes. Purley is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Croydon and London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

Can built-in shelves be adjustable?

It is your choice: fixed, adjustable or a mix. Fixed shelves add stiffness to the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing later. A mix often works best.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.

What depth do built-in bookshelves need?

It depends on what you keep. Paperbacks need much less depth than art books or records. We plan depths around your collection during the design visit.

Could you do it yourself?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
