Our built-in bookshelves across Croydon

Built-in bookcases are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. MDF gives smooth panels that paint well, and birch plywood gives strong shelves. You can have a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, in a colour agreed with you. We work across London, including Croydon. We make built-in bookshelves from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are empty alcoves that could hold books and books piled on the floor.

In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the shelving you have in mind, and whether you want cupboards below.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up, check the wall and plan the shelf spans with you.
  3. You receive a written quote setting out the shelving, materials and finish, for you to look over.
  4. The bookcase is made in our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home, fixed securely to the wall.

How our quotes work

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What you get with us

  • Saturdays by arrangement
  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • We work across all London boroughs
  • A design visit, then a written quote

Arranging a design visit

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, use our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Near you in Thornton Heath

Our area takes in the homes around Prince George pub, Norbury Manor Business and Enterprise College for Girls and The Archbishop Lanfranc School. Nearby too are Winterbourne Junior Girls' School (under half a mile west), Grangewood Park (0.8 miles east) and Church of St Stephen (less than half a mile west). Thornton Heath has its own railway station: Thornton Heath station. Other landmarks nearby include Crystal Palace Museum (1.9 miles north-east) and Centrale Croydon (1.7 miles south). Green spaces nearby include Biggin Wood.

Built-in bookshelves for homes across Croydon

Some living rooms across Croydon are long knocked-through rooms; others are compact flats where one wall has to hold everything. Built-in bookshelves can take on either, from a pair of alcoves to a full wall. You choose the colour, and whether it is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand.

About 29% of the homes in Croydon went up before 1919, and about 24% between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. 6 of the 32 places in Croydon with their own pages here have their centre inside a conservation area, going by Historic England’s records. The rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.

Croydon is part of the area we cover, which takes in all 32 boroughs and the City. If you’re unsure about access or parking, mention it when you contact us.

Thornton Heath: If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Stephen, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live near Grangewood Park, built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you contact us.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Bespoke isn’t instant: it needs a design visit, a quote and making time. If you are renting or moving soon, a good standalone bookcase may be the better buy.

What to check before you book

  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home

Boards, parts and paint

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, for an even, factory-like finish on shelves and uprights.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the bookcase is fitted. It is easy to touch up later, and it suits a traditional room.

What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves

The price for your room depends on:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The internal fittings

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

Helping us understand the room

To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, send us a few details through our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.

Where other trades come in

Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving
  • Structural changes, like taking out a chimney breast
  • Electrical work, like new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician

Questions we are often asked

What happens at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

That’s normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it, and it is agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Which boards do you build with?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes.

Will you travel outside London?

No. We cover London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

The furniture is built in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. At the design visit, we measure the route along with the room itself.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
