Built-in bookshelves in Forestdale

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Forestdale

A shelf’s strength depends on its span, its depth and its load. Long spans carrying books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support, or the run is split into shorter bays. Birch plywood is strong and helps shelves stay flat. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are somewhere to keep toys and books tidy and shelves that suit a period room.

Post-war houses often have a through lounge or a living room with a wide window at one end. Around Forestdale, many homes come from between 1945 and the early 1970s, so built-in bookshelves are often planned to give the room a focal point. A run of low cupboards with shelving above can sit under or beside the window, leaving any radiator clear.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

From workshop to your room

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Post-war houses tend to have simple halls and stairs, so carrying in is rarely difficult. Even so, the route is measured at the measuring visit. The pieces are assembled, levelled and fixed in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. It starts when you let us know about the wall and your books.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design.
  3. Your written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and go through it with you before we leave.

Where other trades come in

We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:

  • Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
  • Knocking through or altering walls
  • Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician

Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

The problems built-in bookshelves solve

New owners of older houses often want shelving that suits the house. The alcoves beside a chimney breast are an obvious home for shelving, and built-in shelves sit well in a period room.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Empty alcoves that could hold books
  • Books with nowhere left to go
  • Storage for children’s books and games
  • A home library or study

For families living near Courtwood Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Forestdale

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Forestdale?

Yes, we work across Croydon, Forestdale included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details.

I live near Sanderstead station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Croydon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The time on site depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We’ll explain what fitting day involves before we start.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Usually not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character.

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf bookcases come in fixed depths, which rarely suits a mixed collection. We can make deeper sections below and shallower ones above to suit what you own. A ready-made unit pushed back to the wall leaves a gap above the skirting, and that gap catches dust and wastes depth. Built-in pieces sit tight to the wall, scribed over the skirting.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
