Flat-pack or bespoke?

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

About our fitted home offices in North Cray

The desk is the heart of a home office. It’s made at a height and depth to suit you and the way you work, with drawers or cupboards beneath where they’re useful. Shelves and cupboards can be planned around it. The design visit in North Cray is where these choices are made. We make home offices from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are no way to put work away and shelving that bows under the load.

Around North Cray, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. In a 1930s house, the small room over the stairs often becomes the study, and its raised bulkhead can be built over or around. Shelving, a desk and closed storage can all fit a room like that.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

What it’s made from

Pull-out drawers

Drawers under a desk keep stationery and papers to hand. A deep drawer can hold hanging files. Each one is sized for what it holds.

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF because it is stable and gives a smooth surface for paint. It suits doors, drawer fronts and panels, where the finish is most on show.

FAQs: fitted home offices in North Cray

Do you cover homes near Albany Park station?

Yes, homes across Bexley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room.

Can you make fitted home offices for a home in North Cray?

Yes. North Cray is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bexley and London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

What happens during the design visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

What fitted home offices cannot fix

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Painting the walls and ceiling
  • Electrical work for the office, which your electrician carries out
  • Converting a loft to make room for an office

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

  • Birch plywood
  • Cable routes
  • Filing drawers
  • Built-in desks
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish

Flats, leases and landlords

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.

How fitting day works

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so let us know during the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the room and your desk set-up is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure and plan the desk, shelves and storage, and look at where the light falls. New sockets or wiring are a job for your electrician, ideally before fitting.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the office.
  4. We make the desk and storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable holes and routes built in.
  5. The desk and shelves are fitted, with the cable routes ready for your equipment.

How to prepare

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
