Built-in bookshelves in North Kensington, Kensington and Chelsea

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make built-in bookshelves for homes in North Kensington, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Empty alcoves that could hold books

North Kensington homes and built-in bookshelves

Homes built before 1919 make up about 53% of the housing in the streets around North Kensington, with about 15% built between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of North Kensington include The Anglican Chapel (Grade I), less than half a mile north-west, and Kensal House Day Nursery (Grade II*), under half a mile north-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If you live on or close to a main road in North Kensington, let us know during the design visit. We will plan where the van can stop.

If your home is one of the older houses near Dissenters' Chapel, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Kensington Palace, about 1.9 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. If you live in a flat close to Kensal Green station, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

North Kensington is about 2 miles south-east of Kensington, within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Design visits and fitting in North Kensington can be on a Saturday, by prior arrangement. North Kensington is one of 13 places on our list for Kensington and Chelsea.

About our built-in bookshelves in North Kensington

Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. For a long shelf of books, we use a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support part way, or the run is split into shorter bays. We often use birch plywood, which is stiff and strong under heavy books. We make built-in bookshelves from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about room for a record collection and bookshelves in keeping with an older house.

Picture rails, deep skirting boards and plaster cornices are part of the character of older houses, and built-in bookshelves need to meet those lines neatly. A large share of the housing around North Kensington went up before 1919, so those details are worth looking at closely at the measuring visit. The top line can stop at the rail or run on to the cornice, depending on the room.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the built-in bookcase we’ve designed for the room, what it is made from and how it is finished.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we have measured the way in.

Questions from North Kensington

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in North Kensington?

Yes. North Kensington is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Kensington and Chelsea and London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details.

Is parking a problem for fitting in North Kensington?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Should my shelves be fixed or adjustable?

They can be, and many people choose a mix. A few fixed shelves keep the bookcase rigid, with adjustable ones in between.

Can shelves go around a radiator?

It’s possible with some thought. The heat has to rise and move into the room, so we leave a gap or open front rather than boxing the radiator in. Often the better answer is to stop the shelves short of it, or have your plumber move it.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

What keeps bookshelves from bowing under books?

Whether a shelf sags depends on how long it is and what it carries. We choose the shelf thickness and material to suit, with supports or shorter bays on long runs. Overloading any shelf will still make it bend, so spread heavy books out.

From workshop to your room

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

Preparing the room

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Starting with a design visit

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To book one, send us a few details through our contact form.

Where other trades come in

It is useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving
  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles that)
  • Plumbing work around the shelves

Not sure whether your space suits built-in bookshelves? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What it is made from

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Fixed and adjustable shelves
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Cupboards below
  • Birch plywood

Tips worth knowing

These points come up often when people plan built-in bookshelves. They help before and after fitting:

  • Decide whether you want fixed shelves, adjustable shelves or both
  • Tell us about parking and access at the measuring visit
  • Think about cupboards below for things you’d rather hide
  • Measure your tallest and deepest books

Paint is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. For the first while, place books gently rather than sliding them along.

Watch for damp marks on external walls behind the shelves. Damp needs its cause fixing by the right trade, and it is easier to deal with before it spreads.

What it costs

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • How big the furniture is
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Helping us understand the room

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Approximate measurements of the space

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
