Built-in bookshelves in Kensal Town, Kensington and Chelsea

Planning built-in bookshelves for a home in Kensal Town? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a written quote, before anything is made.

  • Storage for children’s books and games
  • Empty alcoves that could hold books
  • Books with nowhere left to go

Built-in bookshelves for your home in Kensal Town

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf bookcases come in fixed depths, which may be too deep for paperbacks or too shallow for art books. Bespoke shelving can mix depths. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.

Why us?

  • Every quote follows a design visit
  • Saturday work by arrangement
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Every London borough and the City of London covered

How we make built-in bookshelves for Kensal Town

Shelving near a radiator needs some thought. Heat has to rise and move into the room, so any shelving over or around a radiator is planned with a gap or an open front. Some people prefer to keep the shelves clear of the radiator altogether, or ask their plumber about moving it. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about wasted wall space around a door or window and a room lined with books.

Picture rails, deep skirting boards and plaster cornices are part of the character of older houses, and built-in bookshelves need to meet those lines neatly. A large share of the housing around Kensal Town went up before 1919, so mouldings are something we expect to talk about during the design visit. The top of the furniture can stop at the picture rail or carry on to the cornice, whichever suits the room.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the built-in bookcase designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished.

Materials and finishes

Plinths and scribe strips

Most period walls need scribing. It gives built-in shelves their built-in look.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, so we use it for uprights, panels and faces. It is a sensible choice against an external wall.

Built-in bookshelves in Kensal Town: local notes

About 54% of the homes in the streets around Kensal Town went up before 1919, and about 17% between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List has 51 entries within half a mile of the centre of Kensal Town. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. About 55% of households in the neighbourhood around Kensal Town live in purpose-built flats, according to Census 2021. For a flat, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

If your home is one of the older houses near St Thomas Kensal Town, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Near listed buildings like Trellick Tower Cheltenham Estate, under half a mile east of the centre of Kensal Town, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. For families living near St Thomas' CofE Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

Questions we’re often asked

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Queens Park (London) station?

Yes, homes across Kensington and Chelsea and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

I live in a flat in Kensal Town. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Built-in bookshelves are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

How deep should bookshelves be?

It depends on what you keep. Paperbacks suit shallow shelves, while large books and records need deeper ones, and a mix often works best. We plan depths around your collection during the design visit.

How long will the fitting take?

The time on site depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Do built-in bookshelves have adjustable shelves?

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing later. Many people choose both.

Practical tips

Getting the most from built-in bookshelves starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Consider deeper cupboards at the bottom
  • Note the sizes of your largest books and records
  • Think about whether the spacing needs to change later
  • Ask your electrician about sockets early

On an outside wall, do not pack books tight against the back. Watch for any musty smell or marks.

Don’t block the space left for radiator heat with books or objects. Trapped heat is not good for the room or the books.

Could you do it yourself?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.

From workshop to your room

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that are not straight, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about where the bookshelves will go.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
  3. We then send a quote in writing for the bookshelves.
  4. The sections are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight, so there are no gaps along the sides.
  6. The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
