Questions from White City
Does a conservation area in or near White City affect fitted furniture?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Is parking a problem for fitting in White City?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
It’s made in sections. At the design visit, we measure the route along with the room itself.
Do you work for landlords and letting agents?
Yes. The process is the same: a design visit, a quote in writing, then the furniture is made and fitted. If the property is let, the agent can arrange access with the tenants.
Will you paint the walls around the furniture?
No. We make, fit and finish the furniture, and plastering and decorating are for other trades. The furniture itself is spray painted or hand painted.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.
How we make built-in bookshelves for White City
A full bookcase is heavy, so the fixings matter. Each bookcase is fixed with fixings chosen for the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall. Loose plaster or a weak wall should be dealt with first. Most enquiries start with bare walls that could hold shelving and shelving behind a desk for books and files; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Ceiling heights across London vary a lot, from tall period rooms to compact modern ones. However your room in White City is built, the height is measured as carefully as the width, because it decides how tall built-in bookshelves can go. Sections are sized for the stairs and doors on the way in.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?
Standalone bookcases cost less and you can have them right away. You can take them to your next home. Built-in shelves stay with the house and are made for its walls. Gaps behind, beside and above ready-made furniture collect dust, and fitted furniture closes them, which makes cleaning simpler.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit, and the quote follows.

Flats, leases and landlords
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

What happens on fitting day
On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Whatever the age of your home, the furniture is fitted to the walls you have, scribed where walls bow and levelled where floors slope. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.
- You get in touch about built-in bookshelves. A rough idea of the wall and the books is plenty to start with.
- We visit to measure up, look at the wall and agree shelf depths and spacing, and talk about cupboards below.
- We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish.
- We build the shelving in our workshop, sizing each shelf for what it carries. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- Fitting day: the bookcase goes in, is levelled and scribed, and fixed securely. Fixings are chosen to suit brick, plaster or stud walls.
Preparing the room
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Boards, parts and paint
Spray-painted finish
Spraying coats edges and corners evenly, which suits shelving with lots of edges. You choose the colour at the design stage.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, so it’s a good choice for shelves that carry books. Its layered edge can be painted or left on show.
Built-in bookshelves in White City: local notes

Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. 8 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of White City. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your street in White City joins a main road, it’s worth telling us at the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.
Near listed buildings like Building Adjoining to West of Harrow Club, less than half a mile east of the centre of White City, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Leighton House, about 1.3 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. If you live near Hammersmith Park, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.
