Built-in bookshelves for your home in South Kensington
Built-in bookshelves in South Kensington
Older rooms often have skirting, picture rails and coving to work around. We can cut around them, stop below them or run neatly up to them. Walls in older houses are rarely flat, so we scribe the edges on site. People typically come to us about wasted wall space around a door or window and shelving behind a desk for books and files, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Around South Kensington, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and in London most homes of that age are Victorian or Edwardian. Houses of that age normally have a chimney breast in the front and back reception rooms, with an alcove either side, which gives built-in bookshelves an obvious place to go. Walls are rarely flat, so each piece is scribed to the plaster and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet.
If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Why bespoke in South Kensington?
With off-the-shelf shelving, you’re limited to the maker’s finishes. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, to suit the room. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so off-the-shelf pieces either don’t fit or leave a gap either side. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.
Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It is useful to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

Flats, leases and landlords
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
What happens on fitting day
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.
- It starts when you let us know about the wall and your books.
- At the design visit we measure and plan the shelves together.
- We send a written quote.
- We make the shelving in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray finish is applied there too, if you chose it.
- We fit it in your home and go through it with you before we leave.
Before fitting day
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
Arranging a design visit
The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Living-room storage in South Kensington
In the neighbourhood around South Kensington, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 71%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 9%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Within a mile of the centre of South Kensington, 31 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. Where a home in South Kensington is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that at the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.
For an older house near Chapel of St Luke, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. Carlyle's House, about 0.6 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. Near listed buildings like Church of St Luke, under half a mile east of the centre of South Kensington, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.
South Kensington is about 1 mile north-west of Kensington, within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. From period terraces to newer flats in South Kensington, we measure the room as it is and design around it. Across Kensington and Chelsea, we cover South Kensington.
Here we cover the SW3, SW7 and SW10 postcode area for built-in bookshelves. Whether you live on a street like King's Road, Fulham Road and Museum Lane or on one nearby, we can arrange a design visit for built-in bookshelves. South Kensington is near the A3217, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you contact us. Close by, we also work in Little Chelsea (1 mile south), Chelsea (1 mile east), Brompton (1 mile north-east), World's End (1 mile south) and Earl's Court (1 mile west). Other parts of Kensington and Chelsea we cover include Notting Hill (2 miles north-west), Notting Dale (2 miles north-west), Kensal Town (3 miles north-west) and North Kensington (3 miles north-west).
Around South Kensington
In South Kensington, that includes homes near Natural History Museum Library and Archives, Anglesea Arms and London School of Dramatic Art and the streets around them. The nearest railway station is West Brompton station, roughly 0.8 miles west of the centre. A little further out are Victoria and Albert Museum Spiral (a few minutes’ walk north) and Harrods (0.8 miles north-east). Not far away are Campden Hill and Serpentine.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
Questions from South Kensington
Can you fit built-in bookshelves to the uneven walls of an older house in South Kensington?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Will a conservation area stop me having built-in bookshelves fitted in South Kensington?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Do photos help?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.
What happens at the design visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.
Do you make good the walls afterwards?
No. Our work is the furniture, not the walls, so any work on the walls is for a plasterer or decorator. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.
What it is made from
Moisture-resistant MDF
For cupboard doors below the shelves, MDF gives a flat, stable door. There’s no grain to show through the paint.
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting lets you judge the colour in your own room. Scribed edges and joins are painted along with the rest.
