Built-in bookshelves in Earl's Court, Kensington and Chelsea

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on built-in bookshelves in Earl's Court starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • Shelves that suit a period room
  • A bare wall above a doorway
  • Room for a record collection

What built-in bookshelves can’t fix

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job
  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
  • Relocating radiators or pipework

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

Built-in bookshelves in Earl's Court: what you get

Books weigh a lot, and a wall of them puts real load on the fixings. We fix built-in bookshelves to sound walls with fixings that suit how the wall is built, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall. Loose plaster or a weak wall should be dealt with first. Most enquiries start with space for art books and records and bookshelves in keeping with an older house; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often taller than in later houses, and around Earl's Court, a large share of homes are that age. That gives full-height built-in bookshelves room to reach the picture rail or the cornice, with the top line set to match the room’s own mouldings. Where a fireplace has been blocked up, the chimney still needs ventilating, and any damp is sorted before units go in.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

What affects the price in Earl's Court

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The overall size of the piece

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It’s useful to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.

What we need to know

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To book one, get in touch through our contact form.

Built-in bookshelves in Earl's Court: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 72% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Earl's Court, with about 9% built between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Earl's Court, 23 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your street in Earl's Court joins a main road, it is worth telling us at the measuring visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

If your children go to St Cuthbert with St Matthias CofE Primary School or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. The wider area includes historic houses such as Garden Lodge, about 0.3 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?

Tall standalone bookcases still need fixing to the wall, so the difference is smaller than it seems. What really changes is the fit, the strength of the shelves and the finish, and every part is planned for the wall. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.

There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, message us from the contact page.

From workshop to your room

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays at the design visit.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the books and objects you want on show is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and talk through shelf spans, depths and spacing so the shelves won’t sag.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the design, materials and finish.
  4. The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves stiffened where they span furthest.
  5. We fit it in your home with fixings that suit the wall, and a hand-painted finish, if you chose one, follows on site.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Ask for a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

Advice

Is it time for built-in bookshelves?

Families often need shelves for children’s books and games. Low cupboards and open shelves can grow with them, with adjustable shelves for changing sizes.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Shelves deep enough for large books
  • Bowing shelves in an old bookcase
  • Books piled on the floor
  • A room lined with books

If you live in a flat close to West Brompton station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Earl's Court

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Earl's Court?

Yes. Earl's Court is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Kensington and Chelsea and London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to West Brompton station?

Yes. We cover all of Kensington and Chelsea and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

How long does it take to fit built-in bookshelves?

It depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The bookcase is made at our workshop first, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

It is something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some need consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on your lease, so check it or ask your managing agent.
