What affects the price in North Kensington

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The internal fittings

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

What we need to know

There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It is enough to send:

  • How you want to use the space
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Bespoke kitchens in North Kensington: what you get

A kitchen needs other trades as well as a carpenter. Your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics, and we plan the cabinets around where their work goes. Most enquiries start with a central island in a larger kitchen and a kitchen that fits an uneven room, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

A large share of the homes around North Kensington were built before 1919, and in a Victorian or Edwardian terrace, the kitchen is often in the narrow rear part of the house, or in a side return that has since been extended. Walls and floors in older houses are rarely true, so cabinets are scribed and levelled on site. The worktop, sink and appliances are the ones you choose.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Kitchens in North Kensington homes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around North Kensington were built before 1919 (about 53%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 15%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for kitchens, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 161 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of North Kensington. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. About 24% of households in the neighbourhood around North Kensington live in flats in converted or shared houses, according to Census 2021. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

If your children go to Barlby Primary School or a school nearby, a drawer set aside for lunch boxes and water bottles keeps mornings calmer. Living in a block of flats near Kensal Green station? Then kitchens are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Is it time for bespoke kitchens?

A painted kitchen can be refreshed later, which appeals if you are staying put. Hand painting is simple to touch in or refresh over the years.

People typically get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • A kitchen planned around your appliances
  • Cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls
  • A larder for food and small appliances
  • Extra cupboard space

If you live in a period home close to Dissenters' Chapel, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

From workshop to your room

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and how you cook.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and plan the cabinets around the worktop, sink and appliances you choose.
  3. A written quote follows for the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. We build the cabinets, doors and drawer fronts in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home, working around your plumber, your electrician and an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

Ask for a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough measurements. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the measuring visit.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

My home in North Kensington is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Will a conservation area stop me having bespoke kitchens fitted in North Kensington?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you do the plumbing and electrics?

No. We’re carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets. Plumbing is done by your plumber, gas by a Gas Safe engineer and electrics by your electrician, and we plan the cabinets around their work.

Will you travel outside London?

No. Our work is in London only: every London borough and the City of London.

Is the furniture made to order?

Everything is made at our workshop for your room, then brought to your home and fitted. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Do you supply the worktop and appliances?

We plan the kitchen around the worktop, sink and appliances you choose. It is useful to choose them before the design is final, and your quote sets out what’s included.

Boards, parts and paint

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth hides adjustable feet and lets the cabinets sit level. Scribe strips close the gap to a wall that isn’t straight.

Larder and dresser units

They’re a good way to use an alcove or the end of a wall.
