How we make built-in bookshelves for Notting Dale
The right depth depends on your books. Paperbacks sit happily on shallow shelves, while art books, atlases and records need more. Deep shelves let small books disappear behind each other, while shallow ones leave large books overhanging. A common answer is deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower ones above. People normally come to us about books with nowhere left to go and a room lined with books, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Solid brick external walls are standard in Victorian and Edwardian houses, while the walls inside can be brick or lath and plaster. With so many homes around Notting Dale built before 1919, we check which you have before deciding how built-in bookshelves are fixed. Lath and plaster needs a lighter touch and the right fixings, especially behind loaded shelves.
The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves
Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Notting Dale?
Yes, we work across Kensington and Chelsea, Notting Dale included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details.
Does a conservation area in or near Notting Dale affect fitted furniture?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
Getting it in is planned during the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
How long are you in the house for fitting?
It depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.
How do I get a quote?
Simply use our contact form. Rough measurements and a few photos help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design.
Should my shelves be fixed or adjustable?
Some or all of them can be adjustable. We normally keep some shelves fixed for strength, and the rest can be adjustable.
Flats, conversions and lettings
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit.
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you get in touch.
Fitting day, step by step
There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You get in touch and let us know what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
- We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
- You get a written quote for the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop we make the shelves from birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, sized for the span and the load.
- We fit it in your home with fixings that suit the wall, and a hand-painted finish, if you chose one, follows on site.
How to prepare
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
Arranging a design visit
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, use our contact form.

Near the centre of Notting Dale, Historic England’s list includes Cosmic House (Grade I), under half a mile south, and The Electric Cinema (Grade II*), under half a mile east. Houses of that age normally have alcoves, tall ceilings and picture rails, all of which shelving can use.

Is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf bookcases are cheaper and quick to buy. You can take them to your next home. Fitted shelving is made for one wall and stays with the house, which is the trade-off. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.
In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It is useful to talk about parking at the design visit.

Do you need built-in bookshelves in Notting Dale?
Records, large art books and collections need shelves sized for them. Standard bookcases rarely suit them.
We’re often asked to help with:
- Low shelves children can reach
- A room lined with books
- Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices
- Shelves that sag under books
If you live in a flat close to Shepherds Bush station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.
What to check before you book
- How parking will work on your street
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
Honest limits
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:
- Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving
- Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
- Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
