What happens on fitting day

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Whatever the age of your home, the furniture is fitted to the walls you have, scribed where walls bow and levelled where floors slope. Spray-painted pieces arrive finished; hand-painted ones can be finished on site.

  1. You describe the room and what the shelves will hold.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing. Read it through and ask us anything.
  4. We then make the bookcase in our workshop, with shelves thick enough for their span.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted in your home, ready for your books. Everything is levelled and scribed to the walls as it goes in.

How to prepare

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Starting with a design visit

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, use our contact form.

How we make built-in bookshelves for St Margarets

Built-in shelving fills a wall, an alcove or a whole room, and is made for that space. It runs from wall to wall and, if you like, up to the ceiling, giving your books a proper home. If you’re thinking about built-in bookshelves in St Margarets, we start with a design visit to measure the wall and talk through what the shelves will hold. We make built-in bookshelves from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a bare wall above a doorway and space for art books and records.

Some living rooms in London have tall ceilings and cornices, while others have low, plain ceilings. However your room in St Margarets is built, the height is measured as carefully as the width, since it sets how tall built-in bookshelves can be. Each section is sized to fit the route into the room.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Caring for painted furniture

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Estimate how many metres of books you have
  • Plan any sockets or wiring with your electrician before fitting
  • Measure your tallest and deepest books
  • Consider a mix of fixed and adjustable shelves

Load the shelves gradually and evenly. Keep the heaviest books low and close to the supports.

Put coasters under anything that holds water. Wipe up spills straight away.

What it is made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

For cupboard doors below the shelves, MDF gives a flat, stable door. It has no grain to show through.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface on shelves and uprights.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

Questions from St Margarets

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in St Margarets?

Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London, and St Margarets is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Is parking a problem for fitting in St Margarets?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Can you build bookshelves over a radiator?

We plan around it with care. Any shelving over or around a radiator needs room for the heat to move into the room. Moving a radiator is a plumber’s job.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you tell us about the room on our contact form.

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Do you need built-in bookshelves in St Margarets?

New owners of older houses often want shelving that suits the house. The alcoves beside a chimney breast are an obvious home for shelving, and built-in shelves sit well in a period room.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy
  • Books with nowhere left to go
  • Shelving that frames a window
  • Bowing shelves in an old bookcase

The wider area includes historic houses such as Richmond House, about 1 mile south. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
