Built-in bookshelves for your home in East Sheen

East Sheen homes and built-in bookshelves

In the streets around East Sheen, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 58%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List has 27 entries within half a mile of the centre of East Sheen. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Terraced houses are home to about 32% of households in the streets around East Sheen, based on Census 2021. Terraced houses in London often have alcoves beside a chimney breast, and built-in bookshelves are made to those widths.

If you live in a period home close to All Saints' Church, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. If you live in a flat close to Mortlake station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. Near listed buildings like Parish Church of St Mary, less than half a mile north-east of the centre of East Sheen, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Built-in bookshelves in East Sheen

Books weigh a lot, and a wall of them puts real load on the fixings. Each bookcase is fixed with fixings chosen for the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall. If a wall is weak or the plaster is loose, it is best put right before fitting. Most enquiries start with a room lined with books and shelving that works with picture rails and cornices, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In streets where so much of the housing went up before 1919, as it did around East Sheen, plenty of living rooms are two reception rooms knocked into one, each with its own chimney breast. One pair of alcoves might take shelves and the other cupboards, a TV or a desk. Some internal walls in houses of that age are lath and plaster, so fixings are chosen to suit what’s behind the paint, and long shelves are sized so they do not sag under books.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Practical tips

People planning built-in bookshelves often ask about these. They help whatever the room:

  • Tell us where the heaviest things will go
  • Let us know about access early
  • Think about whether the spacing needs to change later
  • Tell us if a radiator sits where you’d like shelves

Make a note of the paint colour used for future touch-ups. Small marks on a hand-painted finish are simple to touch up.

Keep any gap or opening above a radiator clear of books and objects. Heat needs to move into the room.

What it is made from

Plinths and scribe strips

In older houses, we normally scribe the sides and the top. It’s what makes shelving look part of the room.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting often suits shelving in period rooms. You choose the colour.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in East Sheen

Does a conservation area in or near East Sheen affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Is East Sheen in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes, East Sheen is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Can bookshelves go around a door?

Yes. Wrapping shelves around a door or window is a good way to fill a wall. The openings are measured when we visit, and the shelving is planned around the frames.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

How long will the fitting take?

The time on site depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.

How do you decide on shelf depth?

That depends on your books. Paperbacks need much less depth than art books or records. We plan depths around your collection at the measuring visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bought bookcases typically come in one depth. We can make deeper sections below and shallower ones above. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that’s part of the price. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

From workshop to your room

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You get in touch about built-in bookshelves.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan the shelves together.
  3. Your written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The bookcase is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray finish is applied there too, if you chose it.
  5. We fit it in your home and go through it with you before we leave. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so it’s best to load the shelves gently at first.

Preparing the room

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Let us know about parking near your home
