Built-in bookshelves for your home in North End

Fitting day, step by step

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. The time the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a post-war house, the hall and stairs are typically straight and simple, so carrying in is rarely difficult. The way in is still measured, along with the room. The pieces are assembled, levelled and fixed in place.

  1. You get in touch about built-in bookshelves.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design.
  3. Your written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The bookcase is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and go through it with you before we leave. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so it is best to load the shelves gently at first.

Before we arrive

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Arranging a design visit

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

How we make built-in bookshelves for North End

Shelving near a radiator needs some thought. The heat needs somewhere to go, so any shelving over or around a radiator is planned with a gap or an open front. Some people prefer to keep the shelves clear of the radiator altogether or have a plumber move it first. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are books with nowhere left to go and room for a record collection.

Many homes around North End date from the post-war decades. Rooms from that era are often squarer than in older houses, and many have no chimney breast at all. That makes a full wall of built-in bookshelves a strong option, or a recess built out with cupboards either side. Some walls of that age are concrete or blockwork, and the fixings are matched to them.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

What it is made from

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is stiff and strong, so it’s a good choice for shelves that carry books. You can paint the edge or show the layers.

Shelves

For a long shelf, we use a thicker board, a lip on the front or a support so it stays straight under books. Splitting the run into shorter bays also helps.

Could you do it yourself?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

Honest limits

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job
  • Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving
  • Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in North End

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in North End?

Yes. North End is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bexley and London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

I live near Slade Green station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Bexley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.

How long will the fitting take?

The fitting depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Can you build shelves over a doorway?

Yes. We can build shelving either side of a door or window with shelves above it. It uses wall space that is often left bare and can frame a window seat.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Built-in bookshelves for homes in North End

In the streets around North End, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 33%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 29%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The centre of North End is within about a quarter of a mile of the Oak Road Conservation Area. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If you live on or close to a main road in North End, let us know at the measuring visit. We will plan where the van can stop.

If you live near Braeburn Park, built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. For an older house near St. Augustine's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Living in a block of flats near Slade Green station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.
