What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves
To work out the quote, we look at:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- How many doors and drawers there are
How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
What to send when you get in touch
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Your postcode and the borough
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
About our built-in bookshelves in Bexley Riverside
Older rooms often have skirting, picture rails and coving to work around. We can cut around them, stop below them or run neatly up to them, whichever suits the room. Walls in older houses are rarely flat, so we scribe the edges on site. If your home has shelving behind a desk for books and files and alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste, built-in bookshelves made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.
Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, which matters around Bexley Riverside, where homes like these are a big part of the housing. A long through room gives built-in bookshelves a whole wall to work with, or mark out the sitting end from the dining end. New plasterboard in an extension and older brick or block in the original house take different fixings.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Materials and finishes
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting lets you judge the colour in your own room. Scribed edges and joins are painted along with the rest.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, which suits uprights, side panels and doors. It’s a sensible choice against an external wall.
How fitting day works
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually straightforward, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going.
- You get in touch about built-in bookshelves.
- We visit to measure up, look at the wall and agree shelf depths and spacing.
- You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish, including spray or hand painting.
- We build the shelving in our workshop, sizing each shelf for what it carries.
- Fitting day: the bookcase goes in, is levelled and scribed, and fixed securely.
Before fitting day
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Advice
Built-in living-room furniture in Bexley Riverside
About 40% of the homes in the streets around Bexley Riverside went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 26% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. All of London, Bexley included, is inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Bexley Riverside is covered by it. We go through parking and access during the design visit. A quarter or more of the homes in the streets around Bexley Riverside (about 26%) were built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Post-war rooms tend to be simple shapes, often without a chimney breast, so built-in bookshelves often run along a full wall, fixed to suit the wall, which may be concrete or block.
If you live near Braeburn Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. If you live in a flat close to Barnehurst station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If your children go to Normandy Primary School or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Bought bookcases come in the maker’s colours. We paint ours in the colour you choose, to suit the room. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Fitted furniture is designed around them.
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves
Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Bexley Riverside?
Yes, Bexley Riverside is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Bexley and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Bexley Riverside?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.
Can my walls take a full bookcase?
That depends on how the wall is built. Fixings are chosen for the wall type into sound structure. If a wall isn’t suitable, we will tell you.
What happens if there’s a radiator where I want shelves?
It can be done, but it needs careful planning. The heat has to rise and move into the room, so we leave a gap or open front rather than boxing the radiator in. Often the better answer is to stop the shelves short of it, or have your plumber move it.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
