About our built-in bookshelves in Old Coulsdon

Shelf depth depends on what you keep. Paperbacks sit happily on shallow shelves, while art books, atlases and records need more. Deep shelves let small books disappear behind each other, while shallow ones leave large books overhanging. A common answer is deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower ones above. If your home has books with nowhere left to go and shelving behind a desk for books and files, built-in bookshelves made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

In an area like Old Coulsdon, where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, many homes have had the front and back rooms knocked together. The result is often a long room with a chimney breast, a good spot for built-in bookshelves. At the design visit we plan any cable routes and ventilation the room needs.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Could you do it yourself?

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Old Coulsdon

Is Old Coulsdon in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes. Old Coulsdon is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Croydon and London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Coulsdon South station?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room.

How do I get a quote?

It’s easiest to message us from the contact page and let us know about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.

Should my shelves be fixed or adjustable?

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing later. Many people choose both.

How much will my built-in bookcase cost?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

Can my walls take a full bookcase?

That depends on how the wall is built. We fix bookshelves with fixings that suit the wall. Where a wall cannot take the load, we’ll say so.

Built-in bookshelves in Old Coulsdon: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Old Coulsdon were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 47%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 36%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 3 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Old Coulsdon. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. More than a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Old Coulsdon (about 47%) were built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Post-war rooms tend to be simple shapes, often without a chimney breast, so a full wall of built-in bookshelves is often the answer, fixed to suit the wall, which may be concrete or block.

For an older house near Church of St John the Evangelist, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live near Dollypers Hill, built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. For a family home near Keston Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

What it costs

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The width and height of the space
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Before the design visit

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • How you want to use the space
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot advise on your lease.

What happens on fitting day

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed during the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You send us a few details about the room and what the shelves will hold, and whether you want cupboards below.
  2. We visit to measure the wall and discuss the design.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, for you to look over.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took.
  5. The shelving is fitted in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them.

Before fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

When you need someone else

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we do not do:

  • Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
  • Redecorating, which is for your decorator
  • Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.
