TV and media units in Ruislip Manor

Media equipment warms up as it runs, so sealing equipment in a cupboard is not a good idea. We plan ventilation into the unit, with open backs, gaps or vented doors where they’re needed. Equipment makers often say how much space their boxes need around them. Typical reasons to get in touch are empty alcoves beside the TV and games, controllers and remotes everywhere, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Ruislip Manor, many homes have had the front and back rooms knocked together. The result is often a long room with a chimney breast, a good spot for TV and media units. At the design visit we plan any cable routes and ventilation the room needs.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

What it is made from

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting lets you see the colour in the room’s own light. Scribed edges are painted along with the rest.

Moisture-resistant MDF

There’s no grain to show through the paint for a smooth finish. We use the moisture-resistant grade.

From workshop to your room

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the unit you have in mind, including the size of the screen.
  2. We come to measure, note the sockets and agree the layout.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, ready for you to check.
  4. We make the cupboards, shelves and panels in our workshop.
  5. We install the unit, leaving the cable routes and vents clear. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.

Before fitting day

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Ask for a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, send us a few details through our contact form.

Your questions about TV and media units in Ruislip Manor

I live near West Ruislip station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Hillingdon and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Ruislip Manor?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Can a TV unit hold speakers?

Speakers and soundbars get open shelves sized for them. Closed doors muffle sound, so we leave them open.

What if I buy a larger TV?

We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind, if you expect to upgrade. Mention the largest screen you might buy when we visit.

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.

Ruislip Manor homes and TV and media units

About 60% of the homes in the area around Ruislip Manor went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 17% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 8 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Ruislip Manor. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. About 47% of households in the streets around Ruislip Manor live in detached or semi-detached houses, based on Census 2021. A house like that typically has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

For families living near Lady Bankes Infant School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. Ickenham Hall, about 1.5 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

Ruislip Manor is about 1 mile north of Ruislip, in the London Borough of Hillingdon. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, Ruislip Manor included. Ruislip Manor is one of the places in Hillingdon where we make TV and media units.

In HA4 and HA5, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. If your home is on a street such as Larne Road, Elm Avenue and Beech Avenue, or close by, we can visit to measure up for TV and media units. The A4180 runs close to Ruislip Manor; on busy main roads, unloading TV and media units takes a little planning. Close by, we also work in Ruislip (1 mile north), Ruislip Gardens (1 mile south), Ickenham (2 miles south-west) and Hillingdon (3 miles south-west). Other parts of Hillingdon we cover include Hayes (4 miles south), Yeading (3 miles south), Yiewsley (3 miles south), West Drayton (5 miles south-west), Yiewsley (5 miles south-west) and Cowley (4 miles south-west).

Practical tips

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote
  • Let us know about parking and access during the design visit
  • Think about whether you’ll upgrade the screen
  • Decide whether the TV will be wall-mounted or stand on the unit

When you change equipment, use the cable routes we planned instead of making new ones. It keeps the unit tidy.

Ask your electrician about new sockets rather than running extension leads through the unit, and do not daisy-chain adaptors.

Is it time for TV and media units?

In older living rooms, a TV can look out of place. A built-in unit around the chimney breast lets it sit more quietly.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve include:

  • Equipment running hot in a closed cupboard
  • Somewhere to keep games tidy
  • Speakers muffled behind doors
  • Empty alcoves beside the TV

Living in a block of flats near West Ruislip station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

What to check before you book

  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
