About our built-in bookshelves in West Drayton

Built-in bookcases are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF suits the panels and faces, while birch plywood is used where strength matters. You can have a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, in a colour agreed with you. We fit across Hillingdon and the rest of London. Typical reasons to get in touch are storage for children’s books and games and space for art books and records, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Post-war houses often have a through lounge or a living room with a wide window at one end. Around West Drayton, many homes come from between 1945 and the early 1970s, and built-in bookshelves can give a room like that a focus. A run of low cupboards with shelving above can sit under or beside the window.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Is it time for built-in bookshelves?

Children’s books, toys and games often need a home too. Low cupboards and open shelves can grow with them.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve are these:

  • Shelving that frames a window
  • Storage for children’s books and games
  • Shelves that suit a period room
  • Bookcases that lean or wobble

For a flat near West Drayton station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

When you need someone else

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving
  • Knocking through or altering walls
  • Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Fitting day, step by step

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Walls in post-war homes can be concrete or blockwork, so fixings are chosen for the wall on fitting day. We protect floors and doorways as the furniture comes in, and the pieces are assembled in the room.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the books and objects you want on show is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
  3. You get a written quote for the design, materials and finish.
  4. The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves stiffened where they span furthest.
  5. We fit it in your home with fixings that suit the wall, and a hand-painted finish, if you chose one, follows on site.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Ask for a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Related advice

Could you do it yourself?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in West Drayton

Is West Drayton in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes, West Drayton is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Hillingdon and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in West Drayton?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.

How do I get a quote for built-in bookshelves in West Drayton?

Just message us from the contact page. Rough sizes and a few pictures help, and we will arrange a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.

Do built-in bookshelves have adjustable shelves?

You can have fixed shelves, adjustable ones or a mix. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing later. Many people choose both.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
