Fitted wardrobes for homes in Ruislip Manor

About 60% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Ruislip Manor went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 17% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Ruislip Manor, 4 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. More than half of the homes in the neighbourhood around Ruislip Manor (about 60%) date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead.

If you live in a period home close to Church of St Paul, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. The wider area includes historic houses like Ickenham Hall, about 1.5 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If you live near Church Field Gardens, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window.

Fitted wardrobes in Ruislip Manor

Fitted wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Doors and panels are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colour you choose. Then we fit them in your home, levelling them on a plinth or adjustable feet. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are space under the eaves going to waste and not enough hanging space.

A bedroom in a house from between the wars usually has simpler mouldings than a Victorian one, so fitted furniture can often run neatly to the ceiling. If yours is one of the interwar houses or semis that make up much of the housing around Ruislip Manor, high cupboards make a good home for suitcases and spare bedding. Skirting boards are cut around neatly.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Flats, leases and landlords

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the measuring visit.

What fitted wardrobes cannot fix

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
  • Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Decorating or plastering the room

Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can message us from the contact page and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Interwar houses typically have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Fitted wardrobes arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
  2. At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn. Tell us about parking as well, as a van usually needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the wardrobes.
  4. The wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

I live near West Ruislip station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Hillingdon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Ruislip Manor?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We’ll design around them.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Typically not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent.

Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?

Yes, with ventilation planned in. External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we plan airflow behind and within it to help avoid condensation and mould.

What happens during the design visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf wardrobes come in standard heights and widths, so there’s typically a gap on top and at the ends. A fitted wardrobe fills the space wall to wall and up to the ceiling, so the space is used and there is nowhere for dust to collect on top. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, which shows up against standard furniture. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.

We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.
