What wall beds cannot fix

Before you plan the job, it is useful to know what we do not do:

  • Decorating around the cabinet
  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
  • Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism

Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Wall beds in Ruislip Manor

The bed mechanism must be fixed securely, exactly as its maker specifies, to a wall and floor that can take the load. We check the wall and floor at the measuring visit, because the fixing has to suit what the wall is made of. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are a bed that fills a little-used room and a living room with a bed that folds away.

In a 1930s semi, the main bedroom often sits over the front room and its bay, so fitted storage normally goes on the walls either side while the bay stays open. Interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing around Ruislip Manor, so it’s a room shape worth planning for. Every wall is measured, as a room that looks square rarely is.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Bespoke wall beds or ready-made?

You can buy wall bed units off the shelf, often for less, and in a straightforward room they may be enough. They’re made in standard sizes and rarely allow for an uneven wall or an alcove. A bespoke cabinet is built for the room. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote.

Questions we are often asked

Can you make wall beds for a home in Ruislip Manor?

Yes. We cover all of Hillingdon and the rest of London, and Ruislip Manor is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Ruislip Manor?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

How much does a wall bed cost?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A single bed cabinet and a full wall with shelves and a desk are very different jobs, so we quote once we have seen the room. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we can’t advise on it.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

The problems wall beds solve

Plenty of spare rooms have become home offices. The room needs to be an office and still sleep guests, and a wall bed makes that possible.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • Somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep
  • A studio that works by day and night
  • Hiding the bed when it’s not in use
  • A hobby room with a bed for guests

The wider area includes historic houses such as Ickenham Hall, about 1.5 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

What happens on fitting day

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You tell us about the room.
  2. We come to measure and go through the bed, the storage and the finish.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. The cabinets are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly. New paint needs gentle use while it cures.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

Ask for a quote

A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. When you’re ready, drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.

Related advice

Before and after fitting day

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Lower and lift the bed steadily
  • Clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth
  • Let us know what the wall is made of if you know
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls

Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch in if the cabinet gets a knock. Spray-painted finishes clean easily with a soft cloth and keep their smooth look.

Measure the space in front of the wall, not just the wall. You need clear space for the bed to come down, so plan where furniture will sit.
