Fitted wardrobes for homes in South Wimbledon

Rooms under a slope are common in loft conversions and top-floor rooms. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. It turns an awkward corner into storage. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are gaps above and around standalone wardrobes and not enough hanging space.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often tall, and a large share of homes around South Wimbledon are that old. That height can be used, with fitted furniture taken up to the cornice and top cupboards for occasional things. Original mouldings are worked around rather than removed, so the furniture suits the house.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

When you need someone else

Not everything around fitted wardrobes is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:

  • Taking out a chimney breast to make space
  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
  • Decorating or plastering the room

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Questions from South Wimbledon

Can you fit fitted wardrobes to the uneven walls of an older house in South Wimbledon?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Is South Wimbledon in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?

Yes. South Wimbledon is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Merton and London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you tell us about the room on our contact form.

What affects the price of fitted wardrobes?

Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.

What happens during the design visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

What happens on fitting day

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the wardrobes you have in mind.
  2. We come to measure the room, check the walls and ceiling and agree the layout. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
  3. You receive a quote in writing setting out the wardrobes, doors and finish.
  4. The wardrobes are made at our workshop, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, set level and scribed to the walls and ceiling.

Before fitting day

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

How to get a quote

It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we will arrange a design visit.

Caring for painted furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
  • List the things that won’t hang, such as jumpers and shoes
  • Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
  • Ask your electrician about moving sockets early

Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them. Heavy coats are best on a short rail or near a support, so the rail stays straight.

Keep any ventilation gaps clear. Watch for musty smells or marks on clothes.

What affects the price in South Wimbledon

Several things affect the price:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Getting in touch

Ahead of the design visit, we will typically ask about:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • How you want to use the space
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved

Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. When you’re ready, message us from the contact page. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in South Wimbledon

Some bedrooms are hard to furnish. A sloping ceiling, a chimney breast, a low window or a door in the wrong place can defeat standard furniture. Fitted wardrobes are shaped around them.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Standard wardrobes that do not fill the wall
  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed
  • Mismatched bedroom furniture

For a family home near Holy Trinity CofE Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.

What to check before you book

  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Real projects you can actually look at

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

South Wimbledon homes and fitted wardrobes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 66% of the housing in the streets around South Wimbledon, with about 15% built between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The centre of South Wimbledon is within about a quarter of a mile of the South Park Gardens Conservation Area. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Merton included. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in South Wimbledon is covered by it. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.

Southside House, about 1.6 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Winefride, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
