Fitted wardrobes for your home in St James's
Do you need fitted wardrobes in St James's?
A move is a common trigger. Standalone wardrobes from a previous home may not fit the new bedroom, or may not make it up the stairs. Built-in wardrobes are planned for the room you live in now.
If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:
- Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
- A sloping ceiling that is hard to use
- Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
- Too little room for clothes
For a flat near London Charing Cross station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- How they handle walls that are not straight
- Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure
- Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
Fitted wardrobes in St James's: what you get
We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. The doors are finished with spray paint in the workshop or painted by hand, in a colour agreed with you. We then fit them in your home, setting them level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Most enquiries start with a tight bedroom where doors get in the way and clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
In a Victorian bedroom, the chimney breast typically sits on a side wall, with a recess to each side. A large share of the homes around St James's date from before 1919, so many bedrooms there may share that layout. Storage can go in each recess, with a bridge of cupboards over the chimney breast. The flue behind is kept ventilated, and any damp is sorted first.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in St James's
My home in St James's is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted wardrobes are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
My house in St James's is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?
That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. Where a bed sits close by, sliding doors often work better, and in a roomier space hinged doors give easier access. We look at it with you when we measure.
How long are you in the house for fitting?
The time on site depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will explain what fitting day involves before we start.
How do I get a quote for fitted wardrobes in St James's?
It’s easiest to tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
Can I send photos ahead of the visit?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Fitted wardrobes for homes in St James's
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around St James's were built before 1919 (about 54%) and since 2000 (about 24%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. There are 934 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of St James's. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and fitted wardrobes can be designed to work around them. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home is on or just off a main road, it’s useful to mention it. We can then plan where the van will stop.
For families living near Soho Parish CofE Primary School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like The Haymarket Theatre (theatre Royal), original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

How it is made
Spray-painted finish
Spray painting is done in the workshop, which gives large doors a smooth, even surface. It suits a crisp, modern look as well as a classic panelled door.
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting lets you judge the colour in the room. Joins and scribed edges are painted in the same coats.

What it costs
Several things affect the price:
- The width and height of the space
- Spray painting or hand painting
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- Doors and drawers, and how many
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.
Before the design visit
What helps most when you first contact us:
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, message us from the contact page.
Fitting day, step by step
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.
