How we make fitted wardrobes for W1J

Hanging heights are planned around your clothes, not a catalogue. Long coats and dresses need one tall section, while two rails, one over the other, suit shirts and jackets. We also think about who uses it, keeping rails at a height they can reach. Typical reasons to get in touch are storage boxes stacked under the bed and an awkward slope in a loft bedroom, and the answer is made at our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what you keep in your wardrobes now.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. The written quote sets out each wardrobe’s inside layout, the doors, the materials and the finish.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, which holds screws well for rails and runners.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.

What affects the price in W1J

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Arranging a design visit

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Bedroom storage across W1J

If your bedroom in W1J has a chimney breast, the alcoves either side are natural places for storage. In rooms without one, a full wall of storage often works best. Each design is scribed and levelled on site.

The biggest shares of homes in W1J were built before 1919 (about 51%) and since 2000 (about 24%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. More than half of the homes in W1J (about 51%) were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths, scribed to walls that are not straight. Purpose-built flats are home to about 76% of households in the W1J postcode district, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

W1J is part of the area we cover, which takes in all 32 boroughs and the City. Tell us about access and parking when you first get in touch.

St James's: Close to St Anne's Churchyard? Keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. The wider area includes historic houses such as Marlborough House, about 0.3 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the wardrobes are fitted. Small marks are simple to touch up, and it works well in a period bedroom.

Plinths and scribe strips

The plinth lifts the wardrobe and hides an uneven floor. It can line up with the skirting.

Pricing fitted wardrobes in W1J

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:

  • How square the room is
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.

Helping us understand the room

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Approximate measurements of the space

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Caring for painted furniture

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Empty the area where we will be working
  • Tell us which walls face outside
  • In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
  • Look at how many long coats and dresses you have

Doors can settle a little once the wardrobes are filled. Hinges can normally be adjusted to line the doors up again, and sliding doors can be adjusted on their runners.

Do not overload a single rail or shelf. Rails and shelves are planned for normal use.

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

A spare room turning into a guest room or a child’s room is another reason. Built-in storage makes the room work for its new role while leaving space to move. Inside, the layout can change as needs change.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go
  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
  • Empty alcoves in the bedroom
  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way

Where other trades come in

Some parts of a job need another trade, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
  • Electrical work, such as moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Redecorating around the wardrobes

Questions we are often asked

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you use our contact form.

Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?

The wardrobes are made in sections sized to get up the stairs, into the lift and through the doors. We measure the stairs, landings and lift as well as the bedroom. In a leasehold flat, it’s worth checking the lease first.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Electrical work is not something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.

Can you build wardrobes around a bed?

Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.

How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?

It’s worked out with you when we measure, starting from the clothes you have. Adjustable shelves keep some flexibility for later.

How do I get a quote?

It’s easiest to fill in our short enquiry form and tell us about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.
