Built-in bookshelves in West End
We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. MDF suits the panels and faces, while birch plywood is used where strength matters. You can have a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, in a colour agreed with you. We work across London, including West End. Most enquiries start with storage for children’s books and games and bowing shelves in an old bookcase; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
A large share of the homes around West End were built before 1919, and in London most homes of that age are Victorian or Edwardian. Houses of that age usually have a chimney breast in the front and back reception rooms, with an alcove either side, and those alcoves are the natural home for built-in bookshelves. Walls are rarely flat, so each piece is scribed to the plaster and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet.
Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
With off-the-shelf shelving, you’re limited to the maker’s finishes. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, by spray or by hand, so they can match the walls or stand out. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines, with panels and details to suit the house.
We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

West End homes and built-in bookshelves
The biggest shares of homes in the area around West End were built before 1919 (about 49%) and since 2000 (about 21%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Part of West End is in the Seven Dials (Covent Garden) Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. That usually means a van in West End needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.
For an older house near St Mary's Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. Living in a block of flats near Tottenham Court Road station? Then the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.
West End is within the London Borough of Camden, about 1 mile north-east of St Pancras. We design and make built-in bookshelves for homes in West End. Our Camden coverage includes West End.
Design visits and fitting in W1F, W1D and W1T work the same way as everywhere else we cover. West End is near the A301 and A400, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you get in touch. If you’re just outside West End, we also cover Seven Dials (1 mile east), St Giles (1 mile north-east), Soho (1 mile west), Chinatown (1 mile south-west) and Covent Garden (1 mile east). As one of the bigger places in Camden, West End is covered for built-in bookshelves and everything else we make.

Boards, parts and paint
Plinths and scribe strips
A plinth lifts the bookcase and takes up an uneven floor. Its height can match the skirting board.
Spray-painted finish
Spraying in the workshop means the shelves arrive already painted. Treat the shelves gently while the paint cures.
Questions we are often asked
How do you fit built-in bookshelves in a flat in West End?
At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Built-in bookshelves are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in West End?
Yes. West End is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Camden and London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
How is the price worked out?
It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. We send a written quote after the design visit.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.
The problems built-in bookshelves solve
Some want a room that works as a library or a study. A room lined with books feels different.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- Bookshelves in keeping with an older house
- Bowing shelves in an old bookcase
- Empty alcoves that could hold books
- A bare wall above a doorway
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Giles in the Fields, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.
Choosing a carpenter
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- How parking will work on your street

How fitting day works
You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.
- You get in touch and let us know what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
- At the design visit we measure the wall and talk through shelf spans, depths and spacing so the shelves will not sag.
- Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
- In our workshop we make the shelves from birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, sized for the span and the load.
- The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.
Preparing the room
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
