Built-in bookshelves in Charing Cross
Charing Cross homes and built-in bookshelves
Homes built before 1919 make up about 50% of the housing in the streets around Charing Cross, with about 21% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List has 752 entries within half a mile of the centre of Charing Cross. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and built-in bookshelves can be designed to work around them. Purpose-built flats are home to about 77% of households in the neighbourhood around Charing Cross, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Martin in the Fields, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. For a family home near Soho Parish CofE Primary School, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.
Charing Cross is about 1 mile north-west of City of Westminster, part of the City of Westminster. From period terraces to newer flats in Charing Cross, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Our Westminster coverage includes Charing Cross.
We work across W1F, W1D and W1S for built-in bookshelves. Our area takes in homes on streets such as Duck Lane, Drury Lane and Bridle Lane, for built-in bookshelves and any of our other fitted furniture. Charing Cross sits close to the A4 and A301. If your home is on one of them, tell us during the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. If you are just outside Charing Cross, we also cover St James's (1 mile west), Adelphi (1 mile north-east), Chinatown (1 mile north-west), West End (1 mile north) and Covent Garden (1 mile north-east). We also make built-in bookshelves in nearby places like Paddington Green (2 miles north-west), Paddington (2 miles west), Connaught Village (2 miles west), Lisson Grove (2 miles north-west), Westbourne (3 miles west) and Little Venice (3 miles west).

Built-in bookshelves in Charing Cross
A built-in bookcase is shelving made for one wall, one alcove or one room. It can run wall to wall and up to the ceiling, so books have a proper home. For a home in Charing Cross, the first step is a design visit to measure up and talk through your books. Typical reasons to get in touch are shelving behind a desk for books and files and books with nowhere left to go, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
In streets where so much of the housing went up before 1919, as it did around Charing Cross, the living room is often two rooms knocked through, with a chimney breast in each half. That can mean one pair of alcoves for shelving and the other for low cupboards, with the screen on a chimney breast between. Older internal walls can be lath and plaster rather than brick, which changes how shelving is fixed, and long shelves are sized so they do not sag under books.
The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the built-in bookcase designed for your room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

What prompts built-in bookshelves in Charing Cross
Sagging or wobbly bookcases are another reason. Bowing is a sign the shelves are too long or too thin for the load. We plan spans and thickness so shelves stay straight.
People typically get in touch with us about things like these:
- Books piled on the floor
- Shelves that sag under books
- Shelving that works with picture rails and cornices
- Bare walls that could hold shelving
Close to Victoria Embankment Gardens? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Where they’ll park and unload
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.
Questions from Charing Cross
Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Charing Cross?
Yes. We cover all of Westminster and the rest of London, and Charing Cross is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.
I live near London Charing Cross station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Westminster and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
What affects the price of built-in bookshelves?
Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.
Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?
Bought bookcases typically come in one depth. We can make deeper sections below and shallower ones above to suit what you own. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

From workshop to your room
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.
- You contact us with a short note about the shelving you have in mind.
- We come to measure, look at how the wall is built and agree the layout.
- You receive a quote in writing setting out the shelving, materials and finish.
- We make the shelves and carcasses in our workshop, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
- We fit it in your home, fixed securely to the wall. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.
Before we arrive
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
How to get a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Caring for painted furniture
Getting the most from built-in bookshelves starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:
- Think about whether a radiator should move before fitting
- Let us know about access early
- Decide whether you want doors on the lower section
- Think about whether the spacing needs to change later
Keep a record of the colour so any touch-ups match. Small marks on a hand-painted finish are simple to touch up.
Use mats under plants and vases on painted shelves. Dry any spills quickly.
