Walk-in wardrobes in St Margarets: what you get

With a walk-in wardrobe, clothes, shoes and bags have a space to themselves. We build them in spare rooms, box rooms and corners of bedrooms, fitted out with hanging, shelves and drawers. Everything is built in our workshop and fitted to the room, scribed to the walls and set level. People usually come to us about long and double hanging planned around your clothes and storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

If your bedroom is in a period house, expect uneven walls and tall ceilings; in a newer flat, expect plasterboard and a lower ceiling. Your home in St Margarets could be either, or something in between. Each is measured and fitted in its own way. The height of the room decides how tall the pieces can be.

You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Looking after your furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Plan shoe storage around what you own
  • Keep the room ventilated
  • Decide on doors or open storage before we measure
  • Deal with any damp walls first

Keep heavy items low and lighter ones high and spread the weight along the rails. That keeps the hanging and shelves in good shape.

Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease early. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in St Margarets

The biggest shares of homes in the area around St Margarets were built before 1919 (about 43%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 24%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. 16 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of St Margarets. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. About 43% of homes in the neighbourhood around St Margarets were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Houses of that age often have a small back bedroom or box room that can become a walk-in wardrobe, with storage scribed to walls that wander.

Living in a block of flats near St Margarets (London) station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Asgill House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If your children go to Worple Primary School or a school nearby, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Shelves

Shelves suit folded clothes, bags and boxes. Each shelf is sized for its load.

Moisture-resistant MDF

The moisture-resistant grade suits walk-in wardrobes on external walls, alongside good ventilation.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

From workshop to your room

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking varies a lot across London, from permit zones to private bays, so tell us what applies during the design visit. For a flat, building rules on lifts and working hours are worth checking.

  1. You tell us about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling at several points, as few rooms are truly square.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. The units are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each unit is levelled and scribed to follow the walls.
  6. Before we leave we go through the doors and drawers with you; new paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Before we arrive

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Ask for a quote

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, get in touch through our contact form.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

My home in St Margarets is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in St Margarets?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We’ll design around them.

Can you turn a small spare room into a dressing room?

In many homes, yes. A box room can take hanging, shelves and drawers on its walls, while leaving space to stand and turn. We’ll measure and plan it during the design visit.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Can you put a walk-in wardrobe in part of a bedroom?

Yes. We design the units to make a dressing area within the bedroom, while any new walls are for your builder.
