About our wall beds in St Margarets

Not every mattress suits every wall bed; the mechanism maker sets the size, depth and weight it can take. We will talk through what suits the bed during the design visit, so the mattress you choose fits. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a bed that looks like cupboards by day and a storage wall with a bed inside.

Whether your home in St Margarets is a period house, an interwar semi, a post-war flat or a newer build, the furniture starts from your room, not a standard size. External walls can be colder than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation. Shelves, drawers and any hanging are arranged around your things.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

What happens on fitting day

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and describe the room.
  2. We visit to measure the room and the way in, from the front door to the room itself. Mention parking as well, since vans often need a permit or a paid bay.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. The cabinet is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
  5. The cabinet is joined in the room, fixed securely and set level, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Sofa beds cost less and need no fixing, and for occasional guests that may be enough. With a wall bed you get a proper bed and an empty floor by day, which matters in a small room. A standard unit is the same in every home, whatever the room is like, whereas fitted pieces are designed for one room: yours. The finish is chosen to suit the space.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

The problems wall beds solve

Sofa beds are not always comfortable for regular use. With a wall bed, guests sleep on a real mattress, on a proper frame.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • A storage wall with a bed inside
  • Somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep
  • A study that doubles as a spare room
  • A guest bed that disappears in the day

Near listed buildings like Asgill House, less than half a mile east of the centre of St Margarets, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Common questions about wall beds

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in St Margarets?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

I live near St Margarets (London) station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us, and we will see what we can do.

Can you build shelves or a desk around a wall bed?

Yes, that’s a common request. A desk beside the bed suits a room that’s an office by day, and any new sockets are for your electrician.

Can you fit a wall bed to a stud wall?

We check that at the measuring visit. Different walls need different fixings, and the mechanism maker’s instructions set what’s needed.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
