What happens on fitting day

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
  2. We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
  3. Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
  4. The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves stiffened where they span furthest.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.

Preparing the room

  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

How to get a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Built-in bookshelves in Earlsfield

Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. Long spans carrying books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support, or we divide the run with uprights. Birch plywood is strong and helps shelves stay flat. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are bare walls that could hold shelving and a room lined with books.

Older houses tend to come with picture rails, tall skirtings and cornices, and they set the lines that built-in bookshelves have to meet. A large share of the housing around Earlsfield went up before 1919, so mouldings are something we expect to talk about at the design visit. The top of the furniture can stop at the picture rail or carry on to the cornice, whichever suits the room.

The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bought bookcases come in the maker’s colours. We paint ours in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that don’t meet the skirting. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.

We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

What we don’t do

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we do not do:

  • Painting walls and ceilings around the shelving
  • Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Earlsfield?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

I live in a flat in Earlsfield. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Cupboard doors in MDF stay flat and paint well. There’s no grain to show through the paint.

Shelves

Long spans need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. Shorter bays are another answer.

Living-room carpentry in Earlsfield: local notes

About 65% of the homes in the area around Earlsfield went up before 1919, and about 12% since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Earlsfield include Church of St Andrew (Grade II), under half a mile south, and Earlsfield House (Grade II), under half a mile north-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of built-in bookshelves.

Could you do it yourself?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
