How we make wall beds for Summerstown
The cabinet is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. From the front, the folded bed can look like a set of tall cupboards, so the room doesn’t read as a bedroom by day. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a study that doubles as a spare room and a real mattress for visitors.
In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Summerstown, lots of bedrooms have solid brick external walls. Those walls can be colder than internal ones, so wardrobes and storage on them are designed with ventilation behind and inside to help avoid condensation. Small back bedrooms and box rooms are common too, and they suit wall beds and other fitted storage well.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Tips worth knowing
The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:
- Keep children away while the bed moves
- Clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth
- Think about how often the bed will be used
- Plan a cupboard for spare bedding
Keep to the mattress size and weight the mechanism allows, as a heavier one can affect how the bed balances. If you change the mattress later, check it against those limits.
Measure the space in front of the wall, not just the wall. You need clear space for the bed to come down, so plan where furniture will sit.
Bespoke wall beds or ready-made?
A normal bed has nothing to fix to the wall, which is a fair point in its favour. Where the room needs to be more than a bedroom, a wall bed earns its place day after day. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings.
In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

Your questions about wall beds in Summerstown
Does a conservation area in or near Summerstown affect fitted furniture?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Summerstown?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.
Will a wall bed work on my wall?
That depends on what the wall and floor are made of. The mechanism has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies, to a wall or floor that can take the load, and we look at this when we measure.
Do you cover Summerstown?
Yes. Our area is the whole of London: every borough and the City of London, Summerstown included.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Wall beds for homes in Summerstown
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Summerstown were built before 1919 (about 53%) and since 2000 (about 22%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Summerstown include Leather Bottle Public House (Grade II), less than half a mile north, and Church of St Mary (Summerstown) (Grade II), under half a mile south-east. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 41% of households in the streets around Summerstown live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
The wider area includes historic houses such as Southside House, about 2.4 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. Living in a block of flats near Earlsfield station? Then it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. For families living near Burntwood School, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

What affects the price in Summerstown
The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:
- Parking near your home
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- The number of doors and drawers
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
What we need to know
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Examples of the look you are after
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
Fitting day, step by step
Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room and how often the bed is used. A desk or shelving around the bed can be part of it.
- We come to measure, look at the wall and floor, and go through the layout with you. We also check there is clear space in front to lower the bed.
- A written quote follows, covering the cabinet, the storage and the finish, for you to look over.
- The cabinets are made in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The bed and cabinets are fitted in your home and the mechanism fixed securely. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or painted by hand on site.
Before we arrive
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
