Window Seats in Tooting

Thinking about window seats in Tooting? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing, before anything is made.

  • A radiator that makes the space hard to use
  • A bay window that’s hard to furnish
  • Wanting a quiet place to read

Window seats in Tooting

Window seats for homes in Tooting

A seat under a bedroom or nursery window can store toys, bedding or books. With deep drawers or a lift-up lid, it becomes useful storage as well as a place to sit. Drawers can be easier than a lid for children to use. In Tooting, the design visit is where the details are settled. People typically come to us about a ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay and a period room that needs furniture to suit it, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Original features like shutters, cupboard doors and panelling are worth keeping where they survive. With a large share of the homes around Tooting built before 1919, new storage can be made to sit beside them rather than replace them. Door styles can be chosen to suit the age of the house, and painted to match. If your home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original joinery.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Storage in Tooting homes: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Tooting were built before 1919 (about 64%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 12%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how window seats are fixed and fitted. 4 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Tooting. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Tooting fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.

Near listed buildings like Gala Bingo Club, under half a mile south-west of the centre of Tooting, older homes may keep original joinery that window seats can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If you live in a flat close to Tooting station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If your children go to St Boniface RC Primary School or a school nearby, window seats can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

Bespoke window seats or ready-made?

Bespoke seats are scribed to the walls and set level, so there are no gaps at the sides or the base. A bench simply sits in front of the window. The difference is most noticeable in a period room. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it cannot tip, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What you get with us

  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • A design visit, then a quote in writing
  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
  • Designed for the room you have

Read our comparison of bespoke and off-the-shelf or what to look for in a quote.

Before and after fitting day

These points come up often when people plan window seats. They help before and after fitting:

  • Note the position of any radiator and its pipes
  • Decide if the seat is part of a larger piece
  • Move furniture away from the window so we can measure
  • Decide whether you’d like a lid, drawers or both

Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched in. It’s worth keeping a record of the paint colour. Spray-painted surfaces wipe clean with a soft, damp cloth.

Check now and then that hinges and handles are tight. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If something stops working smoothly, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us.

Questions we’re often asked

Can you make window seats for a home in Tooting?

Yes. We cover all of Wandsworth and the rest of London, and Tooting is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

My home in Tooting is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Window seats are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

How much does a window seat cost?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The size of the window, the storage and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, use our contact form and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Can you build a seat beneath sash windows?

Yes. The seat is set below the cill so the window can still open and close. Where there are shutters, the seat is planned so they still open fully. These details are measured when we visit.

What happens on fitting day

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections built in our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it’s useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. It starts when you get in touch about a window seat.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about how you will use the seat. Shutters and cills are noted too.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. We make the seat, the lids or drawers and any grille in our workshop.
  5. The seat is fitted and set level, ready for a cushion, with the lids or drawers checked with you.

How to prepare

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Doors and drawer fronts

The fronts of a window seat are what you see most. They can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the room. Where needed, a grille is part of the front.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is smooth and even. We spray in the workshop, so the finish is complete before the seat comes to you. The colour is agreed with you.

Where other trades come in

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Painting the walls of the bay
  • Plumbing work on the radiator under the window
  • Any wiring, which needs an electrician

Not sure whether your space suits window seats? You can use our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
